OMG WIDOWS ME IS #&$@ I just got through reformating my drive on my ole P3500 after installing ME, it was so bad! Right after I booted up I installed winamp.. guess what the @*#&ed thing FROZE, I guess my brother was right ME does suck 🙁 (he works @ microsoft tech support Win2k installation team) Cant wait for whistler!!! Anyone know how Linux works for basically a hard drive access tool for mp3s? thats what I was trying to do with ME...
ME=98 hoped up on steroids, and we all know what steroids do...:|

i have a win2k/winME dual boot and WinME is every bit as stable as WIndows 98 SE (not saying much, but WTF). If winamp locks up, either try a different sound card driver, or try a different mp3 player. Windows ME really isnt that bad, it's just not a big enough improvement to justify selling it as a whole new OS, should be Windows 98 Third Edition.

Windows Me is very stable, much more than 98.

I had no problem concerning drivers or programs. Err... apart from WIA.

I'd have to concur that WinME is very stable.

Just because Winamp froze, doesn't necessarily mean that the OS is a POS. There could be other causes, as hungrypete pointed out.

Btw, winamp works ok here.

WinME works for ME. Seems to be much more stable than Win98, which really doesn't say much. I'm seriously considering a move to Linux or even getting a Mac, especially given Microsoft's anti-piracy plans for Whislter.

...hag

Try BeOS if you want a stable OS that can access generic files. There's a demo that sits in a folder in Win98 or whatever, you run it by booting with a boot disk. If you run a Geforce card, you can download a driver that gives decent video support. - M.

Ahem, given that having problems again and again with Windows ME such as crashes after every 15 mins, having reinstalled it over 20 times..Now I'm back to Win2k. WinME definitely is a POS.

It's widely accepted that Windows 98 SE runs faster and uses less resources than Windows ME. In the systems that I've tried both OSes, Windows 98 SE always worked better than Windows ME.

Also more people have problems with WinME then Win98 in general, not worth upgrading IMHO.

🙂

Windows ME isn't even close to as stable as Windows 98se i had to install it 6 times in the last two weeks even on a clean install it still had registry errors

I've installed ME on like 5 computers, all 5 have had problems of one kind or the other, 3 of them have worked fine with 98, and all of them are now working fine with Win2K.

Basically I agree, WinME is &#$@ !!!! @*#&$!!!!!!

lol...well same thing happened to me...i tried to upgrade over win98...but its i think a drivers issue...i did happen to download all the latest drivers for my cd-rw and video card logitech i touch keyboard cam and cordless mouse blah blah blah...took a good bit of time ...but after reformatting c and doing a clean install of winME i have to say its running really good...so if your prepared it seems to me to be ok...althought that soundblast live driver/software update took 5 freaking hours...lol

I believe that WinME is stable, BUT I think older applications/drivers become unstable in WinME. The problem is not necessary WinME.

If Win98 works better for you and your app/drivers, then run Win98.

Turn off the system restore function. It's an incredible hog. I once had my computer's HD running for 5 hours because ME was doing it's "backup". Worthless....

honestly, I think a lot of you guys are over the top. I found ME perfectly good except that my computer felt the drain of system restore (but it is very worthwhile in principle) and my hardware drivers weren't working successfully and I didn't know where to get support, so I use win2k. but I have seen people very pleased with ME so it ain't so bad

Windows ME crashed so much on my sister's Duron system...the faster bootup is not worth the pain.
Went back to 98 SE and everything is back to normal. 🙂

i actually like win me...it's much more stable than my build of 98se. the only two things i have problems with are my ms intellmouse and my zip drive. it's very true that win me does take up more resource than 98se. i've noticed that myself.

You have to use what works best for you! Win2K is the overall stability winner.......but lacks some support in gaming.......I have several systems using WinME and they are much more stable than they ever were under Win98SE........BUT......ME can be a resource hog unless you simply disable the seldom used/disliked features! IMHO you can not dispute an O/S that allows the same system that had to be rebooted nearly daily under Win98SE to go up to five days without a reboot! Seems also that most people seem to have problems with WinME at, or soon after install. From what I gather you either get an install that is stable as hell, or, it is corrupt almost immeadiately! 🙂

I read somewhere that in most situations, you should not upgrade to it (of course you should do it unless you need it), particulary if you are running older components.

For example, I had to download new drivers for my old zip drive to get it to work on my new ME machine.

I have Me running on two machines from clean installs and have had no probs at all. The network was setup in a few mins and I am using Internet connection shareing on three PCs and that works well too.The system restore function is the best part. You can create a restore point before you try anything thats likely to screw your system and if it all goes pear shaped you just go back to the old setup, great. It seems strange that some people have such trouble with Me and others like me seem to have no problems at all.I am going to install Ditectx 8a tonight and I shall create a restore point before I do it so that I can go back if ness. You cant do that with Win 98se.
