The DEL(sometimes F1) key is motherboad BIOS function, the F8 key is OS function, regardless what bios and OS you have, you must start to press DEL several times in a row before you even see the bios screen! It takes a time when computer registers your pressed key. It won't work once bios disappears and OS will start to boot, it never worked like that. When you enter the BIOS, change the Boot drive there and go to your desired OS.
And no, there is no correlation between windows 8 and UEFI or non-EFI BIOS, and there is also no correlation between UEFI and non-EFI BIOS DEL key behavior.
I really believe it just needs abit of training to trigger the BIOS, I built probably 2000 computers and I still have a problem with it sometimes.
If you require to get into windows boot manager that may also be tricky, but if you can't make it, there is a setting in MSCONFIG>BOOT>Advanced options, and there you can set delay for OS selection screen to be displayed and also a default OS.

teadad, a couple questions for you:

1. What is the first thing you see on the display when you power on the machine?
2. Once you power on the machine, how many seconds until you see something on the display?

what kind of keyboard are you using? I've had trouble in the past using a wireless/bluetooth one getting into the bios, especially on a reboot. sometimes it doesn't initialize in time to get into the bios. If ya can, use a wired one.

Thanks... but keyboard is wired.

I solved the problem by picking up a new MB with UEFI... everything is working great now.

Thanks for everyone's input. The new MB is working great. Couldn't find another solution.
