If they put the same amount of work into this as they did into Vista... well, brace yourself.

what a crock of shit to release vista and then replace it so soon (and not with an upgrade to it)

Actually they put tons of work into Vista they just can't think outside the MS box enough to make it show on the surface. Under the hood there are a lot of changes in Vista but you'd never know it from the interface or the way it runs. Take that and the many hyped features that never made it into Vista, largely because they were ideas that sounded good on the drawing board but didn't make much sense in real life, and you see that there is a lot of work in Vista just not much useful from the end users point of view over XP.

So is it going to contain at least half the items that Vista originally promised?

This isn't the first time this rumour has been talked about. I read about Win 7 comming out soon several months back. From a marketing point of view Vista has not been very successful for MS. No where near enough people are migrating to it from XP. So perhaps the marketing guys as MS thought they would try again with an "all new" version.

It's actually pretty normal for MS to release a new OS every couple of years prior to Vista. 98/ME/2000/XP all got released within four years of each other I believe?

Not to mention Vista has the same love that Windows ME had

Not for the same reasons though. ME really REALLY sucked and everyone agreed that it did. Even MS did grudgingly. People don't like Vista for a whole bunch of reasons, many of them valid, some of them not but most would agree that it's just about as stable and leaky or non leaky as XP is.

Bullshit. Unless they're planning on making people pay for Windows Vista SP2 by calling it "Windows 7", they'll never make a 2009 deadline. Hell... they don't even have a beta for Windows 7 released yet! Keep in mind that the beta test cycle for Vista lasted for almost TWO YEARS, and still somehow got shipped with some serious bugs and lousy drivers.

Mark my words... Windows 7 won't ship until early 2011 if not later. They learned their lesson from Vista, and will make sure that STABLE drivers will be available for most major products on it's release date. That means an even longer test cycle than Vista with multiple release candidates.

Vista was a major revamp of the Windows OS not seen since Win95. I doubt Windows 7 will be such a major overhaul. Like I said, the release date between ME and XP was less than two years I believe. I expect Windows 7 will just be an updated version of Vista with a few new features and tweaks.

yeah switching from dos to NT wasn't a major revamp at all (and NT4 -> 2000 too)

Windows 7 aka Vista Sp2 ?

I think the big mistake MS made with vista is waiting so long to release it.
For consumers thats great because most xp bugs have been found or fixed.
Drivers are available for almost everything.
Its installed on most pc.
Large number of people know how it works.

Bad for MS becuase now you need to give people a reason to switch to something else when what they already have works.

Personally I would love for someone to come out with an os that dumps all the old software and is totally new.
Yeah it requires lots of rewrites, but the current OS have so much crap in them to support older software its annoying.

Wow...they must have realized how bad they screwed up with Vista. It's been out since Nov. 2006 and it's STILL screwed up. They originally blamed the hardware drivers, but now that drivers are out they don't have any other excuses. It just plain SUCKS. I have to use twice the processor, twice the memory, and twice the hard drive space to run apps at the same speed that WinXP ran, and all for the benefit of being asked to "confirm" changes every 10 seconds and use a semi-transparent interface.

If Apple got smart and started selling their OS retail, I'd be the first in line.

Bah... not buying it. Windows XP was a far bigger revamp of Windows than Vista was, as it was the first consumer version * of Windows that used the NT kernel. Before then, every consumer version of Windows still had DOS underpinnings and wasn't even remotely stable compared to their business products.

Windows Vista wasn't much more than Windows XP with some added features and some (poorly implemented, in my opinion) changes in the network and multimedia interfaces. How they screwed it up as badly as they did still amazes me.

* Keep in mind that Windows 2000 was a business release. There was no "Windows 2000 Home Edition", or many consumer desktops that shipped with the OS.

Yea we should be thankful Microsoft has the coding/marketing style they have, versus Apple. With Apple, they charge full price for all these stupid point releases that have at best a few new fancy features and release all kinds of support for those specific features to drive sales.
Microsoft likes the consumer more it seems and tends to release significant overhauls at a much slower rate than that of the new versions from Apple and OSX.x. ;)

And ME and XP happened so fast, because around the time ME was released was the release of Windows 2000, which went a different track, using the NT 5.0 core versus the NT 4.0 core around during the time of Windows 98.. whereas '98 went with the non-NT 4.0 core and ME was an upgraded non-NT 4.x core. Realizing the failure that was Windows ME, and the success of Windows 2000 and its NT 5.0 core, a much more stable core... they used that in the consumer market by adding a few new consumer features and slapping a fisher-price interface on it and calling it XP.

I think the wording of it in the article is vague... I think a new version of Vista, say Vista Second Edition will be released with a bunch of new features but same core... with Windows 7 not seen till 2011.

windows 2000 and XP pro were prolly the best windows versions...hands down. i hated 98 and ME, and 3.1/95 are too ancient for me to remember/use.

bring on windows 7...aka vista sp2.

No way vista is the new ME. ME was nearly unusable on every machine it was installed on. I doubt anyone here would say that ME was just as good or even close to 98, but many people including myself have no problems with Vista. No, it isn't worth a paid upgrade over XP, but it is at least functional.
