Windows 7 RC1 on a new custom build?

Hey guys,

I ordered a bunch of parts to build myself a new computer and I'm uncertain as to which OS to use on it. Everything will be brand new, including the HDD.

Currently I have only a Win XP 32-bit disc; and then a download of Win 7 RC1. (32 bit). I can easily download the 64 bit version too.

My question is, would it be foolish to use RC1 on a new build? How would it handle all the drivers that need installing? Is it generally a smooth process, similar to using XP for the initial OS install? I suppose I could always try it; and if it won't work right I can default back to my XP disc.

Any thoughts on 64 bit vs. 32 bit? Primary use will be gaming.

The new build will have an i7 920, ASUS P6T mobo, 6GB DDR1600 and 2x 4890 GPU's, if it helps.

Anyway I'm just looking for some experience or ideas on this. Any help is appreciated!

1. 64bit is required for the amount of RAM that you buying.

2. 7 RC is NOT supported so drivers are hit or miss right now.

3. 7 RC is VERY stable with most issues resulting in annoyances rather than data loss. That said, BACKUP UP your data.

4. I still don't see the harm in trying out 7 RC 64bit :p The worst that can happen is that you end up wasting some time, but if you get lucky you will enjoy it a lot.

5. If you don't go with 7, for your sake use Vista x64 since XP won't be able to take advantage of your new hardware. Although imperfect, a patched x64 bit vista install is pretty good these days,

Give it a shot, you'll be glad you did.

The only issue I've had so far is the MSI Overclocking Center software hangs the whole machine when I try to run it.

Other than that it has been smooth as silk. The Radeon W7 drivers are awesome so far. I haven't run many games on it yet though. Just EQ2 and Stalker:CS so far. All games are on my D partition and I didn't have to reinstall them for W7.

Great, thanks for the advice! It seems I don't need to be as worried about drivers as I was before, and there's really no harm in trying it out. I have the Win 7 64bit disc ready to go; hopefully my package arrives today.
