do they email the key as soon as you pay?

For me it took them 3 days to process the order and email the key and give me a link to the .iso download (when I ordered Vista Ultimate). But i ordered on a sunday. So I'm not sure. I haven't had the chance to do this Windows 7, I still gotta buy a 310$ Wacom Intuos 4 from the school (journey ed).

I finally stopped being lazy and installed Windows 7. The process took around 20 minutes and I did a clean install and the key worked as if full retail. No hacking required.

For me they did and they give you the download link to an installer right away. They don't give you links to the iso files, you have to e-mail them I think. Or you can just google the links. They are hosted on the digitalriver website and lots of places have them posted. I think I have seen them posted here. You don't need a password or anything to download the iso files.

FINALLY GOT MY "UPGRADE" CD! white letter containing an official looking CD and official looking sticker stuck to the envelope.

Would have appriciated a sticker not stuck so I could stick it to my PC but whatever

So what did you do? Is this Pro? I downloaded the ISO and did a clean install on a new RAID array, but the activation fails. Here is the email i got from these folks:

Thank you for ordering from the Windows 7 Student Offer online store.

We apologize for the inconvenience; unfortunately, the product key won't
work if you did a clean installation. the Windows 7 version that we
offer are only upgrade versions.

For your Windows 7 product key to work, you need to reinstall your
previous Operating System and do an upgrade to Windows 7 instead of
doing a clean installation. If you need assistance from our technical
support, Technical support may be contacted at:

I ordered my Windows 7 Pro copy and downloaded/burned/installed the 32-bit ISO. I immediately received my key and did a clean custom install (had XP, deleted and formatted partition).

Got into Windows, activated my copy and all is well.

Everything was smooth as butter except for some initial hanging while trying to install Windows. All it took was some rebooting and a little patience.

I burned the ISO, clean installed, used my key, win. I assumed my key was retail.

I ordered Windows 7 Pro 64 through DigitalRiver and also ordered a backup DVD. I used the ISO because the DVD took forever to arrive.

Maybe its because you ordered the backup DVD? Nonetheless, i emailed them requesting the link to the ISO and there was never any mention the the key would not work with the ISO. Im trying to get a refund now.

I received my online key imediatelly after purchasing it but it wouldn't work as a fresh install on a bare hard drive. So I did the old trick of installing it and not entering the key nor attempting to activating it, then reinstalled after booting into my fresh install of 7 and it saw it as an upgrade and took the key and activated just fine. I'm surprised that others were able to use the key with a fresh/blank hard drive install. After all, it is an upgrade version they're offering, not full retail.

Also, for those that are bummed about no deals for 7 Ultimate, get 7 Pro. The only two things that are missing from Pro that is included in Ultimate is Bit Locker (encryption) and the Language Pack that includes the 35 different languages 7 is offered in. Other than those two things (and the names of course) Pro and Ultimate are the same.

I purchased Windows 7 Pro by calling the MS store and asking about the student special. He ask whether I wanted a full or update version (I asked for full), and if I wanted to have it mailed to me or if I wanted to download it. I verified that the mailed version would ship in the retail package with both 32 and 64 bit media (as shown in an earlier post) and the rep said "yes". I ordered it on Wednesday morning, and it shipped out that night.

The rep also said that they have an unadvertised deal on Office 2007 for $59 (normally nearly $600?). I already own a couple of licenses so I didn't bite, but he said it would probably last this week, maybe longer.
