The biggest pro is the ability for the operating system to address 4GB of memory or more. 32-bit versions usually cap around 3-3.5 GB, for various reasons.

Almost all 32-bit applications will run just fine on Vista / Windows 7 x64, so unless your computer is used for mission-critical purposes, I'd just go for the 64-bit version.

I've heard that the 32bit programs run slower under the 64bit operating sytem than under a 32bit os. Any comments??

I just ordered one through MS store phone # and used my wifes .edu since my college doesnt give them out. Didn't have to pay any shipping either, ground (3-7) is free. Id go this way instead of digital river.

do you have MS's store number? (sorry if it was posted previously).

So you just call and order it, did you get professional and was it for 32 and 64 bit combined like other posts said from the online store?

I called and ordered one for my son and one for my daughter. I told them I wanted them for Xmas gifts. I told the sales rep. that they need to connect to their school domain, so, the salesperson said, "I'll send you the pro versions and that they would be the full retail versions." Both 32 and 64 bit installs are on the disc. They were $29.99 plus tax for a total of $32.46 each. Shipping (UPS) was free. I had to do each transaction separately and give my son & daughters edu email addresses. They sent me a confirmation with the price and my children's email addresses on the invoice. Only my name is on both invoices because it was my credit card. I ordered a copy of Office 2007 Ultimate also for $59.99 ($64.94 w/tax). This was a download only--no box is being sent, but, got the i.d.# on the invoice.

CALL 877-696-7786 Hours are M-F 8am-1am EST; 5am-10pm PST. Worth the call--no downloads, no iso's to fool with, no rejection of id#'s because it is an upgrade id#--and best of all, it's legit!

I bit, downloaded the 64 and burned to DVD. They gave me serial right away. I loaded and did custom because I wanted no possible remnants of Vista. The only issues I had was HP drivers for my HP Pavillion dv9000. HP sucks eggs when it comes to Windows 7 drivers. They have none. I used Windows update and used Vista 64 drivers. Hardest to find was video and chipset. Took a lot of snooping but got it going. Way faster boot up for those of you that had issues with dv9000's taking forever to boot with Vista. It was HP and all their add ons as my Acer box with Vista took half the time. I don't notice a difference between 32 and 64, yet. There are 2 program files folders, one for x86 (32) and the other for x64. Otherwise, pretty good. You can get side gadgets, but not a "sidebar", just wherever. Some I hear are buggy with Win7, so I opted to not get any. Overall, I like it. Drivers can be an issue, going 64 bit a little more issues maybe. I'm picky and I'm fully up and running tho.

I purchased the Win7 Home Premium a few days ago and I downloaded and burned the ISO. I did a clean install and when I tried to activate it the error message I get is "The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations." I tried emailing tech support and all I get is an automated answer. Earlier in the thread, people mentioned this was for the full version of Win7. So what gives?

I'm downloading the 7 pro iso right now. I tried using the DigitalRiver thing yesterday and could never get to the download page so I canceled it and just ordered from the MS store. Painless in comparison to DigitalRiver.

As far as the "clean installation goes", you should be able to load Windows 7 but don't register or whatever...as long as it is a copy of Windows 7. Then, load again and it should see the product it needs to "upgrade" and complete the install for you. As for spdfreak, I got no problems from digital river, but I hope you didn't pay too much for it. You really are paying for the key. You could get a copy of Windows 7 from anywhere. It was probably a simple issue to resolve why it didn't download. It was a 3 gig image I believe. Has to burn to a DVD. Still think Windows 7 should have been free to any Vista owner. Microsoft blows!

This is a know issue, with an easy work round. I've done it a few times myself, and it has worked everytime.

Odd Update:

I was somehow able to purchase two keys for Windows 7 Professional. I was able to add a 64 bit key and purchase that. Then it would not allow me to add a 64 bit key but it did allow a 32 bit key.

Of course, The keys are same between 32 bit and 64 bit versions!

After purchasing 1 64 bit and 1 32 bit it would not allow me to add any more.

This was $29.99 each.

WTF? I was able to purchase one HP and one Pro months ago when this deal was posted! That's 4 keys total for $120!

Jah, this is a little strange. I had been led to believe that the 'Ultimate Steal' site was also another Digital River shopfront, like Win741. But it's still $30 for Windows 7 Professional at 'The Ultimate Steal'.

A friend had told me recently that the Win 7 promotion was going to last until the end of the month, not 3 January, so perhaps that extension applied to 'The Ultimate Steal'.

Thanks for the heads-up. I ordered a 64 bit key last night and a 32 bit key today. 2 copies of Windows 7 Pro for $60 - WOW
