I made an iso out of the downloaded exe & installed no problem. Never had to do the "double install" trick.

Yeah it seems to differ. I did more research last night and this is what you can expect

(a) Windows 7 to automatically accept the key
(b) 1. Double Install your copy of W7
2. Registry Edit for W7 if you don't want to double install

I'm curious why MS allowed this kind of loophole. I suppose the average person won't know...and those who are technologically inclined and may have pirated it, would simply purchase a legal copy at a 'discount' per se, although I suppose they are violating the terms if they don't own a valid older copy of the O/S that is going to be replaced.

I still can't firmly find out the license terms of the OS;

i've been up up and running on this deal since the release. I bought Win7 Pro + Backup Disc. The biggest problem i had was "unboxing" the box files to an ISO and after a small install problem, no problems.

- I ordered the backup disc but it didn't come in till today (Mon Nov 9) - http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7941/win7disc.jpg

- I had really really slow read/write times when booting and installing win7. I think the setup/copying files hung at 5% for 40 mins before i decided to retry.

- I fixed the slow copy/setup by removing all but 2 gigs of ram and it all installed in 30 mins.

- When the time came to choose the install type, i chose Custom, without entering my upgrade key. When it finally booted into windows, it asked to activate, i entered my KEY and hit activate and it verified the install, no problems.

- Prior to installing and formatting my drive, i used my copy of Acronis Drive Image to make a complete image backup for Vista, just incase i needed to install over Vista, if i ran into any activating problems.

- After verifying the installation and activation of Win7, i did a complete backup of the partition.

Hope that helps.

Mine came today. It came in a post-card sized envelope and looks like it went through hell getting here (i.e the type ink on the front is scraped the length of the envelope). Same disc as yours...thanks for the install tip, I'll try it out soon after I backup my XP install.

Mine arrived the same way, but it worked as a clean install so i'm fine with it.

What? I'm confused now...everyone else is confirming a small envelope, but you actually have the retail box. Not that I think it matters (I already bought my own copies...btw your seems to be full, as its almost exactly identical to what i have save for the lack of an 'upgrade' writing on the top), but why would they send some retail boxes and others CDs in envelopes? Maybe they ran out of the backup DVDs and started shipping out the actual copies?

those who ordered through microsoft directly,

how long does it take for them to ship out the order?

Order still in processing. Its not like they process millions of orders, hell even amazon packs stuff faster than these guys.

If the Daughter that is already is out can get an alumni email or if there is free email forwarding for alumni you can use that edu account to get it.

Installed my copy last night. I formatted my main drive, did a fresh install choosing custom, then waited until I got into Windows. I was going to edit the registry so I checked it, and it was already at the required "0" setting, and the retailversion registry entry was set to "1". Unsure but does that mean that I have a full version? FYI this Win7 x64 Professional version. Anyways, I entered my "upgrade" key and it worked fine so I'm off and running with it.

I have a copy of Windows 7 from MSDNAA the full install ISO of the professional version. If I install using that DVD, but use the digital river key, will the key work on it or is it different?

I believe it was mentioned elsewhere (maybe earlier in thread or anoter site) that you can call them and provide some other valid form of id to prove you are a student andthey'll let you order.

damn, am i SOL If my windows 7 copy hasn't come in yet????!

It took mine about two and a half weeks to get to me. I was worried too, but it finally came. Just look out for small postcard sized white envelopes because that's it.

Small Envelope = Digital River
Full Retail Box = MS direct

but according to reports on slickdeals MS is telling most people to go through Digital River. I bought the download and burned to disc, why buy the disc?
