Argh, I just bought the Home Premium version. I totally forgot about finding and selecting the Professional version. 🙁

Any way to cancel change?

http://www.engadget.com/2009/1...-not-working-for-many/ - looks like you might be able to get a refund? 🙂

Are you sure? I'd like a 2nd copy for another PC, but reading their site makes me think you can't get one of each.

(from the Digital River site)
Program Description: Eligible students are allowed to purchase one license of the product below:

1. Microsoft® Windows 7 Home Premium

OR

2. Microsoft® Windows 7 Professional

I bought this version for $29.99 and ran into trouble trying to install it last night.

I tried to go from XP (all services packs, updates, etc) to W7 64-bit on a newly-built PC.

I followed the guides and created a bootable ISO disc. Restarted the PC, set DVD Drive as first boot priority, and the windows install screen starts up. I got to the point where I can select and format drives. I deleted my previous partitions (with XP on them) and tried to format and install W7. No dice. I got an error that said something to the effect of "W7 could not create a partition, read your setup log files."

I then tried to do some reading (on my other PC) and read something that with this $29.99 "upgrade" version the install cannot start from a bootable ISO, and that you need to start the install process from insides windows. Well crap, so I re-installed XP (did not install any updates or service packs), put in ISO disc I created and got an error message that said something to the effect of, "This upgrade disc is not compatible with your current version of windows. Make sure you insert the correct installation disc and try again." WTF!

I then used my external HDD to transfer the original files I downloaded (the two box files and .exe file) to the XP computer, double-clicked the .exe file, and when it was done unpacking got an error that said something like, "could not un-pack and write all the necessary files, make sure you have appropriate permissions and that the folders are not read-only." WTF!!

I have no idea what's going on - can anyone help / advise? Maybe I need to install all the service packs for XP - maybe that's what's causing the second error about it not being compatabile with my current version?

What about this work-around: I have Vista installed on my other PC. Could I install Vista and not activate it (b/c I still need it active on my other PC), then just immediately install W7 over Vista?

I appreciate all help guys, thanks.

Has anyone got the backup DVD in the mail yet? Also, does it come with the product key sticker or the key printed on it somewhere?

I accidentally deleted the e-mail with the product key in it...

I received the backup disc in the mail today and I did not see the product key code printed anywhere in the package/envelope.

If you're using the bootable iso guide from

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html

The syntax he has for creating the iso is not correct, there is also a work around for that error you're getting. I had got the same error and was able to fix it following his directions. Made the iso then deleted all my other partitions during the setup and was able to do a full install with the downloaded student version.

so what is the correct syntax? which part is incorrect and has he corrected it on 1st post in thread?

I still dont have my back-up DVD. It will be two weeks tomorrow since it supposedly shipped.

I ordered over the phone today using this phone #:

1-877-696-7786

I spoke w/ an agent and told them that I saw an offer to get Windows 7 Professional for $30 and that the offer was for students. The agent told me that I could choose either Home Premium or Professional and that whichever I chose, it would come in a retail box w/ both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

I told him that I wasn't sure if I'd need the full version or upgrade version then told him I would be installing on a system that did not have a previous version of Windows on it.

He told me then that he'd put the order in for a full version. After I gave him my student email address and billing / shipping info., he placed the order. I checked my MS store account online (that he created for me) and it shows this on the order:

The crossed out $299.99 makes me feel confident that I'm really going to get a full, boxed retail version.

I've had my RETAIL Win7 Home Premium DVD/box for over a week. It's the RETAIL FULL version and I paid $38.something after shipping charges. As I posted before there were a few problems with their ordering system, but you can buy HP or Pro, Full or Upgrade for $30 download (+optional shipping if you choose retail box).

oscdimg -bC:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop\expandedSetup\ C:\7.is

Thats what I used to create the iso in Vista. change where it says username to whatever your username is

I am going to give that a shot. That is a really nice discount for the full version, even for an upgrade.

Same response I got as well. There is no way in hell my disk shipped when they said it did. Even if it was shipped media mail I would have gotten it by now.

I haven't received my media yet either. I'm not really worried about it though. I think everyone is getting slammed to get this stuff out. My Dell copy that was to come free with my Studio 14z was ordered the day Win7 was released and I'm still floating on an 11/23 estimated delivery date.

great deal with that retail version, but whats the real difference between that and the upgrade version, considering you can fresh install using the upgrade version

Still haven't gotten my disk yet either. I'm not worried though - I think DR will come through.

Nice to know that if it doesn't activiate on a clean slate, you can just install it again. I wonder if this works for retail copies of windows as well (I bought some more off amazon)

Another quick question - Is this locked to the PC (well I guess...motherboard) that you install it on? I was thinking of installing it on my PC soon (old, partially working version of winxp that keeps telling me it wants to die lol), but I may go through an upgrade cycle on hardware late next year and it will probably involve a mobo swap since I have a cheap ecs mobo that came with a frys combo i purchase a couple of years back. It only allows 2 gigs of ram which is a total bust (I want to push it to 6 gigs or even 8 lol so as long prices are cheap)

I tried doing a fresh install with the downloaded iso and key (64 bit pro upgrade) acquired from digital river, but it won't take the key. I continued without entering in the key in hoping that I can activate it once inside windows, but I got the message saying that the key is only for upgrading. What I had to do was reload the installer disk and do a "double" install trick. Then it works!

I made an iso out of the downloaded exe & installed no problem. Never had to do the "double install" trick.
