Windows 10 perpetually fails to install KB4052623 every 10 mins (Solved)

Hi, my Windows 10 machine has been unable to install KB4052623 (Update for Windows Defender antimalware platform) for a couple weeks now. Every 10 minutes it retries and fails. I'm at my wit's end and have no idea how to fix this, as there doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender, the System File Checker doesn't show any issues, and manually downloading and installing the update gives the same error. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Here's the error:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Update for Windows Defender antimalware platform - KB4052623 (Version 4.12.17007.18011).

Thanks!

Based on the advice for that error message (though the wrong software):
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb...update-installation-error-0x80070643-or-0x643

I'd advise firing up a command prompt with admin privileges and run the following:

sfc /scannow

Reboot

then

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Are you having any other odd system issues?

I already tried `sfc /scannow` already, and a `dism` command, but I don't think the exact one you posted, but I'll try yours to see if it makes a difference.

I haven't noticed anything unusual about the system, other than this.

Try another 3rd-party AV program, which should simply disable Defender.
Use that for a week or two, then uninstall the 3rd-party AV program and see if a newer Windows Defender database update fixes the problem.
Two free 3rd-party AV programs that I use:
Avira Free
Kaspersky Free
& probably dozens more:

Maybe... I don't think this update is just a simple virus definitions update, though; the description sounds more like it's a bugfix update to the engine. Do you think your suggestion would help with that?

I suppose there's the chance that the update itself is faulty in some way and will be re-issued in the next week or so.

Possibly. I retried sfc/dism, but no dice. I'll try a 3rd party antivirus for awhile, if only to get these 10 minute recurring update attempts to quiet down.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

OP, which version number of Windows 10 are you using?

(right-click on Start button, click on 'System', it should tell you there I think)

It seems that you aren't alone in this problem. I found a thread at the ten forums which I've linked for you.
https://www.tenforums.com/windows-u...fender-update-kb4052623-error-0x80070643.html

Also some folks at reddit report that a software conflict was causing it for them.

Solved! Actually, double solved. I had seen that ten forums page, but didn't understand how he fixed it. Since you pointed it out again, I did some research and learned about Windows 10's in-place upgrade. After doing that, it is working again and Defender updates itself just fine. It is currently at version 10.0.16299, Build 16299.

The reason I said "double solved" is because, like the OP in that reddit, I use StableBit DrivePool software. I'll be sure to update that to get its fix, too.

Thanks for all the help, everyone!
