Windows 10 1809 (Redston 5) Is here.

Still on 1709 .. MS updates tried to install 1803 twice and it failed. Not sure, but I think Avast needs to be disabled or removed before the online upgrade will work. I do have the latest ISO of 1803 .. I can make a bootable USB .. When you boot from the USB to install it, windows will probably not care about the Antivirus since you won't be in the OS at that time, right ? ? ?

I have found that updating from the latest ISO will do a better job of telling you what is causing the failure.
 
I would tend to agree. My only issue is if Avast will interfere if booting from a USB ISO to do the upgrade. (sooner or later I will have to attempt it)
 
Are you saying that is better than letting the machine boot from the USB stick so you are not in windows ? And if I do it your way, do I need to disable the Avast Antivirus ? ? ?
 
For upgrade, yes. Am I am trying to recall if I had AV running on any of the Avast machines I upgraded. If I did, I know I had it running on minimal install.

Windows won't update if you boot from the USB. It will tell you to start windows and then run the update. I've upgraded many machines running Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, and others. Never had an issue with anti-virus being installed.
 
I was under the impression that when you use the Media Creation Tool or Rufus, that the USB Flash Drive is fully bootable. How else would you install windows fresh ? ? And if it works that way, why not to do an upgrade ? ? Once setup starts, it should ask if you want clean or upgrade and to keep all your files & apps .... But first, before I decide to take the plunge, I must take a few hours to use Acronis and make an Image to an external USB 2.0 hard drive. And I do not even know why Toshiba thinks my laptop might not like Windows 1809 (Toshiba Model C855-S5347) Right now, 1709 does all I need & personally, all I would want from Microsoft is continued Security Updates
 
Why do you think Toshiba has anything to do with it? When I run into this issue, it's always a piece of software I had to uninstall then reinstall after the update. Coincidentally, 1809 was the first to give me no error like this on any machine.

It is bootable, and that's what you would do for a clean install. For an upgrade you have to be in Windows.

I'd just create an image with the built in Bachup and restore. It's faster than Acronis, and more reliable in my experience.
 
Funny that we were just talking about this. Seen a couple articles recently about how limited distribution for the has been. If I understood what they were saying, MS about to increase the throttle rate for it in preparation for the next release.

I can tell you I had issues with updating to 1809 a while back when it was first out, kept getting error on install from WU or USB Media Tool etc, I found the issue on my PC, it was my Bitdefender Free version, for some reason it did not like it installed when attempting 1809 update, so I uninstalled Bitdefender Free version and never got the error install message again on next 1809 attempt, anyway I installed Bitdefender after 1809 was fully installed and it's been running fine since 🙂 .

Bitdefender is what I use on all the computers I maintain outside of work. Never an issue upgrading.

Although I do have one issue where Bitdefender thinks my wireless printer is a malicious site. Have to put it in the exceptions or I just get "web threat blocked" messages whenever I try to print, or access the web interface.

Sometimes Windows can get issues with third party AVs from an old build to a newer version on upgrade, only problem I had was finding what was the actual issue since Win10 errors are sometimes very vague and unclear, once I knew it was Bitdefender and Win10 that did not play nice together on upgrade, was a simple case of uninstalling then reinstalling it after 1809 was installed, I will say it was the only issue I ever had with regards to Bitdefender, you could argue it could be Win10 issue with certain AVs on upgrading.

Correct. If you boot off this and select upgrade, it will tell you to run from Windows. Clean install is the only option when booting off the ISO.
