I really like Win2k in general. I feel it has the best stability/features without the unnecessary complications of, say, Linux.

However, I've run into some annoyances that I think should be addressed:

1. Horrible sound card drivers in general (although I hear the new Philips cards are good)

2. Does RealNetworks even TRY to make a RealPlayer for video that works in NT/2k? Their web site admits they KNOW that some videos do not work with Winnt/Win2k, and they are "working on it"

3. "Lock this Workstation" has a new "feature" in Win2k: the screen saver will not kick in unless set to "1 minute" delay; as a result, the energy saving monitor features will not work either. To get these to work on an unattended workstation you either have to Logoff or set the screensaver to under 1 minute (which is almost unusable)...

4. NetBIOS networking is HORRIBLY slow for unknown reasons... Even worse than NT 4.0.

Anyone care to comment on these or share others?

Kyle

A bad CD-ROM disc or drive can still take down the entire OS despite being very stable at other times.

Does anyone know how to fix the cd rom problem? My friend just installed win2k, then all of a sudden, it wont find his cdrom or burner? How do you fix that?

My gripe is my mousewheel is preety much crap in games since switching over.

In 98SE it didn't work in a couple games so I applied a reg patch: problem solved. In 2K I get one or more of the following:

-It works (CS for example)
-It doesn't even register the fact that the wheel is there (Sacrifice for example)
-It works on occasion (scroll up once to switch weapons works 1 tim for instance, then stops). (project IGI for example)
-It is recognized, but when trying to bind it to something it now tries to be bound to EVERYTHING as soon as I click on
any other binding in an options menu. (Giants, Project IGI)
-It works in menus/chat, but not in the actual game (Diablo 2)

This is using the next to newest version of Mouseware with the reg fix with a Logitech Cordless Mouseman Wheel. I tried the newest and it was even worse and had some new troubles outside of games.

captainsquirlypatrol,

if you installed EZCD creator after you installed WMP7 then uninstalled both and reinstall EZCD FIRST then install WMP7. same thing happened to me when i installed the EZCD or any burning software first, noth of my cd drives went away, then i reinstalled like i said and they came back! it has something to do with a plugin that WMP has with EZCD cdreator.

good luck.

another gripe....now that the stop errors mean something, i have to look them up as opposed to ignoring the giberish that win98 gave ya! :)

I have no gripes.

Well I did crash once in 6 months, but I'm not too worked up over that.

Yea I second that bad CDRom thing, win2k isnt very good when cdrom/cdrw drives dont read disks very well.. I've gotten the blue screen because of that several times, though my DVD drive is far more reliable in 2k, its weird. Also I thing win9x tends to have smoother DivX playback with less tearing. Other than that, excellent operating system.

My M$ strat commander won't work.(small gripe) I get a REALLY REALLY annoying screach each time i boot up(SB live with Altec 880 speakers). I also have some oddball error in cdr-win that i cannot figure out.(works sometimes, other times it restarts my sys.)

Overall, I'm never going back to 9x again.

My IE 5 and (later) IE 5.5 crashed a lot!!! in Win2K (although this happened too in Win98SE)
I don't think it's my fault, since I notice this happened only on certain website, eg Anandtech, when trying to open link in new window, or on website that try to open new window automatically (cnnsi.com)
Anyone has similar problem?
