Win10 - Adverts for OneDrive in File Explorer coming soon?

Admittedly one part of the article is flat-out wrong, where it talks about OneDrive being not easy to uninstall; it's in the "Programs & Features" list, what could be easier to uninstall? Will it get rid of this alleged advert though.

This looks like the basis for the above article:

I haven't seen any of that yet. I have one drive turned off. Never used it, was too clunky in the past.

Not really surprising. From a business perspective it's brilliant, really. They can easily start serving targeted ads throughout the whole OS thanks to all the data they're collecting. It already comes shipped with ads in the start menu, so this is only the beginning.

I used to be a right Microsoft fanboy.
Windows phone, Windows home server, all PCs ran Windows, Windows media centre in the living room... Nowadays they are just pissing me off. I'm down to just the wife's office PC and mine has a partition that has Windows just for games.

Yeah I'm pretty much off Windows now, I still have a win7 machine for gaming, but I more or less treat that like an appliance. My every day machine is Linux. Linux has it's issues, such as stuff that could be made easier/better, but in general I still prefer it over the latest garbage spewd out by Microsoft. They're trying to push the whole cloud crap too. Yeah, no thanks. I hatefully put up with that on my phone because there's literally no other option outside of a dumb phone (which I sometimes consider tbh), but I am NOT going to put up with that with my PC.

Ive seen that image in a few fresh installs of windows 10 for a few months now. I had always though it their way of trying to show/get people to use one drive
If it shows up after you dismiss it then that is new

I've seen that pop up a few times and I'm pretty sure just dismissing it once does not disable it. It still pops up every once in a while, most often after a reboot or update install. Annoying, but MS has to make money somehow.

Well found this over at the sysadmin reddit. if you want to turn off the ads you just need to add this to the registry.
You can copy and past this into notepad and save it as a .reg file and merge

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ShowSyncProviderNotifications"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ShowSyncProviderNotifications"=dword:00000000

?? It is a checkbox in the view menu of explorer. (uncheck Sync Provider Notifications) No need to mess around in the registry.

Hold on, doesn't a tick box (or registry setting) labelled "sync provider notifications" sound like it might disable all OneDrive notifications (such as "you're out of space" or "there's a problem with the sync"?

Yeah. Theoretically other sync providers can do the same type of ads.

I don't think I have ever seen any notifications before, so probably not missing anything.

I'm using Office 365 and $7 a month is nothing to always have up to date copies of Office across 5 devices . . . . .

Ah did not know that there was a check box for this.
I had seen the tread over there when I was looking for something else, and figured that might be useful

As for if it disables the other notifications I cannot say as I have not tested it at all

Or just run Win 10 Pro. I haven't seen any of that on any of my 5 Win10 devices.

Until they strip another feature/advantage from Win10 Pro...

Isint office 365 cloud based? I thought it was web based and stored everything in the cloud.

It depends which Office 365 you're talking about 🙂 The one I mostly see should be labelled "Office 2013/2016 Rental" because it basically is Office 2013/2016. I believe there is also a web-based MSO.

I realise it's probably cheaper to employ a toddler with a rubber stamp than someone who actually employs some logic when naming products, but damn, what MS does is pretty irritating.

That's what confuses some people. While its cloud managed, you still can get the full offline install as well

If you look at the Office 365 Home for example, this one allows you access to the full offline install of Office 2016 for up to 5 devices, plus some other benefits.
But only as long as you pay yearly fee. Essentially you are renting Office with Office 365

I think they finally got the naming sorted out a bit better. The office that is online only/web based is now called Office Online, and its free. The rest as Subscription based and allows access to the full download as well as access to Office Online

Good to know, though there are still going to be a tonne of people going around calling it by its old name; that'll take some time to wear off.

Until your internet goes out, or they decide to discontinue the service, then you're dead in the water.

Wrong. Office 365 is exactly the same offline as Office 2013. No internet everything still ticks along (except Outlook). The subscription you pay upfront and you can then manage your licence(s) and device(s) online, managing is entirely optional until it comes time to pay in 365 days. No reason not to consider Office 365. The added bonus is its always up to date. There is no more need to buy as with Office 2010 or 2013. You only need internet to re-subscribe.

I saw this for the very first time the other day and suppose this is the price we pay for cheap windows.
