this is lame, all these colleges get free or cheap legal ms software, and those of us here at the University of Washington, which is like 15 min from the Evil Empire itself (MS headquarters in Redmond, WA for those who don't know) get nothing!! or, at least nothing if you are not in the Computer Science dept, then you get free Win xp and Visual Studio.net (no, still no office for free) *Sigh* so annoying
 
Check if your school is part of the Microsoft academic alliance. It's a program where the school pays a flat fee for licences for their OS's and development tools, like Spike mentioned. But at my school there's a website you can download cd images of all their products (internal site only) for free as long as you're a computer science, business or engineering major. They just ask you what your major is in a list box, but there is no verification process. My art major friend showed me it. In fact, the school has a library of cds, you can check out and install. They can also generate as many academic license keys as needed.

Free's not bad, but if you're enrolled at UW (Main campus), what's to stop you from partaking in the co-op agreement between Cascadia and UWB?

There's an agreement covering Office XP for the general student body of both schools, though 2k Pro, Server, Advanced & Enterprise + the other OS's and programming languages & apps are still available for $20 a cd through the 'networking club' only to the tech/business and comp. sci. backgrounds.

(Basics of Computing seems to qualify though... 😉 )
 
At Devry they gave me Win2k and Office 2000 plus visual studio 2000, frontpage 2000, visio 2000 and project 2000 as part of my school supplies (It's paid for as part of the tuition, but I can't get any deals on anything else... I get that stuff since it's part of the courses
 

Same here for UC Davis (if not more than retail!!, those ripoffs!)

I have emailed the MSDNAA guy in the EE Dept and the guy refuses to answer... the whole place is screwed up.
 
Doesn't make any sense that some schools get these things for next to nothing and others do not. How the #$&*^ does Microsoft decide who treat well?
 
San Jose State also has a similar program...cheap m$ crap. Bill Gates is trying hard to corrupt college students by selling their products cheap.
 
The reason some schools have better "deals" is because the school itself pays dearly for those good deals. Those big "school-enterprise" licensing agreements are actually pretty expensive. In those cases the student just pays for the media costs-- the school has already paid a lot for the licenses.

Yeah, that sucks. I actually noticed that a while back and if they did have the $5 or free Microsoft software I might have gone there instead of USD 🙂

I get all my software from IUPUI for only 5 bucks a cd
 
You want the best deal????? How about FREE! We get all of our Microsoft products for free at the University at Buffalo.
 
OK, I need to vent a little!

Why don't we just post a sticky thread at the top of this forum that says "College students may be able to get MS software for dirt cheap. Check with your local college for details."

Do we really need a new post on this same topic twice a month?

It has been rumored that you don't have to be enrolled at IU to walk into the bookstore and buy any of there software..........just go to the front register and ask for it........so I have heard...........
