It's actually not that expensive to get the Academic alliance program license. The school has to pay MS $5000 per dept that is going to use the software "for research and academic" purposes, which gives students in those departments access to all MS OS's and dev tools. I talked to the MS rep that covers our school, who can often be seen wandering aimlessly trying to convince faculty and student to give up their powerbook g4's and RedHat installs with the promise of MS tin mint containers and retractable pens.

i actually go to school @ cal poly pomona, they also partake in this alliance, but the only thing is the copies can only be installed twice (for xp pro atleast). Thats what the guy in the book store told me, after the second time installing it, the registration code becomes invalid. has any1 been told the same thing? or perhaps get around this?

The agreemant I had to sign for Devry said that I could use the software as long as Devry paid for thier alliance agreement, if at some pont they didn't then MS asks that I uninstall the software... yeah OK... I'll spend the next 20 years calling Devry up to make sure they are still paying.

No need.
Long before then MS will offer up Win WQ/2003 with many new features that you simply cannot live without.

This OS will include brain probe interface so you no longer have to use that mundane KB or bother with training voice recognition.

nice ^_^x

Not so nice...because that price is really for ONLY the CD, not the license. Also, that price is only available to campus departments. The best price you'll get is probably the academic discount.

Nice deal!

If anyone needs a full, non-acad copy of Win XP though, I'll sell my unopened full version for $149 shipped. PM me if interested...

Tell your school to get in on the MS licensing :). but if they're like most liberal arts colleges, they just can't afford it; it really doesn't make sense for fewer than 10,000 or so students. I'm in the same boat. I work at my school's tech department, and every year they toss around the ideas for software to provide/subsidize, but every year there's less and less. At this point, we give out McAfee Corporate, and that's it. Sigh.

Well, this seems possible for WinXP since you have to "Activate" it by telling Microsoft what your serial# is along with the hardware makeup of your specific PC.

But I'm curious about this:

The best academic deal I have found is IU (Indiana University)

Also They are all the Select License Version with keys built in or a common Key for everyone........

Are they distributing many copies of WinXP Pro using a single license serial? If so, that would be quite a coup for anybody with an illegitimate copy. Just put in the IU serial and you're just one of a gazillion users with the same code....

Any way you can determine the answer to that zoned989?

You are correct. IU is distributing xp (copies mind you not original cd's) all with the same serial number. These copies require no activation. So this would be a dream copy for the criminaly minded.
