Wow heres a discussion that's treading new ground :whiste:

Look at windows 8/8.1 adoption rate.... I rest my case!

All relative, look how many XP users not adopted to Win7 or any newer OS over XP.

I can say I jumped from XP to Linux Mint years ago, best free upgrade I did 🙂 .

The problem is that they want their legit paying customers using the media they already have. Especially OEM customers, since OEM media will have the appropriate drivers pre-loaded.

Sure, but what happens if you lose it? Seems moot anyway as OEM's usually don't send out their own media anymore on a disk. The cheap Toshiba I picked up last year just has a backup/restore utility you can use and I think that just restores the OS with all the bloatware on it. One day I need to sit down and figure out the proper 8.1 upgrade route and how to make a restore image of that.

I recently reinstalled XP Pro to an old laptop via its Dell OEM disk and it still didn't have the proper drivers for it, had to go to dell's website.

I read about this "spring update" yesterday and I think it's a joke, at least for me.

Why? Because all the improvements only apply for the 8.1 startscreen and deal mostly with Apps.

"Problem": I never SEE the startscreen, EVER since I installed Classic Start Menu, I am also not running "apps" on my effing PC but applications and software 🙂 Basically, I configured my PC pretty much like 7

I'll wait until its out before making any judgements on this update, regardless does not matter to me to be honest since next year will be upgrading to Win9 then 10 etc...

Metro I can take it or leave it,end of the day no hassle for me in any Microsoft Windows.

It sounds like you don't really *need* the upgrade that much then honestly. You have your system working the way you want already.

As a Windows 8.1 tablet owner I am sort of excited to see what this update brings. As a 8.1 desktop user I also don't see too much to get worked up about.

Looks like MS will have 8.1 update 1 ISOs on MSDN today.

*edit D'oh, looks like the 'newer' start menu (shown below) is actually a prototype for the next update, not this update. 🙁

There is also a new start menu, where you can have 'tiles' in it, as well as the old school menus.

Good change IMO. Its kind of like a hybrid now.

Next update? What's taking them so long? 😛 All the punditry have been calling for a Start Menu + ModernMix type thing since 8.0.

Anyway, that will be awesome. I can't wait. 😀 The biggest benefit is that getting rid of the full-screenness and bringing in real multitasking will make Metro much more useful for non-tablet users, and maybe that will help spur the development of DPI-independent software (since all Metro software is DPI-independent) that works well with high-DPI screens.

It is legit, came from http://channel9.msdn.com/?wt.mc_id=build_hp
Looks like everyone that went to the show will also be getting a $500 MS store credit, and a XBONE.

Also, it will be available April 8th for all.

*edit, looks like that was a prototype start menu for the next update, and not update 1. 🙁

The way I understood it listening to the keynote it seems that it will be the update 1 update that will have it.

They never named it as update 1 but they always said the next update, the update next week etc and it seems to be the same thing not some future update

**edit**
I guess it is a future update, as this review does not show it http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/windows-81-update-1-review

My wishfull thinking I guess, although I do like 8.1, but the last annoying thing is everything horizontally. for example I have a remote connections group that I have 4 icons it it, but cannot put anything below them

It can't be Update 1. Due to the varied ecosystem in which Windows exists, there is a lot of testing that goes on with major updates like this, with various OEMs and partners given access, which is why there are so many prerelease Windows leaks. There has been absolutely no indication of these any of things being in any of the leaked Update 1 builds, and there is no way that Microsoft will drop in a change this big like this.

Second, Update 1 has already been released to OEMs weeks ago, and leaked copies of it have been floating around for a while (at one point, even accidentally made available on Microsoft's own servers). Update 1 is a known quantity. Today's announcement is merely a formality.

Depends on what else they might sneak in there I guess, I'm pretty happy with 8.1 as is.

But I imagine there are a few things scurrying about in the background all ready.

Booting to desktop, hey hey hey

I have to say, the "Start" screen should have been titled simply "Apps." 'Twould have eliminated much confusion. Especially now, if Windows will be booting to desktop.

Windows 8. Using a touch screen, touch the control panel icon. Windows will load up control panel designed for a mouse\cursor interface. Game over.

Some of the stuff in Update 1, like pinning Modern apps to the task bar, seems like a no-brainer. It just reinforces the thought that Microsoft weren't using their brains when designing Windows 8 for the mouse and keyboard user. Oh well, looking forward to the update regardless.

Remember Win8/8.1 is their first hybrid OS so it takes time to refine things to get most users happy with it ,Win7 is based on Win95 (UI has not changed much)and we all know how old that OS is,Win8 is entirely new so starting from scratch so to speak.

Do I miss the old Start menu?..No, but can understand some users feel they need it since its been here since Win95 days.

Win9 should be interesting to see what they do with the UI etc..

You keep saying that Win 8 is a hybrid OS. But who said a hybrid OS is a good thing. I have tested Win 8 several times, starting with the Developer Preview, and the only consistent thing that comes to mind is that Microsoft did a really poor job of carrying out their (flawed) vision. Every new feature was half-baked which the new patches are trying to fix, but really the core concept here is half-baked so it's kind of hard to fix the rot.

I still don't understand why it was so hard to have a single big option somewhere in the Control Panel or during the OS setup that would put the entire OS into "tablet/mobile" or "desktop" mode. It would be a simple toggle that changes the behavior of the OS, maybe upon reboot. The mobile mode would use much less RAM, turn off advanced features, and use Metro extensively. The desktop mode would be Win 7 basically with the updated visual themes and would have the Start Menu.

This is so simple, it's stupid that Microsoft did not get this. Even if all Microsoft did was to have a option to bring back the Start Menu and disable Metro from the beginning, all this mess would have been avoided.

The reason Microsoft would not wanted to do this is that it would have revealed what a failure Metro is for desktop users.

That said, the new updates are finally restoring Win 8 to what it should have been from Day 1. I hope they learn the lesson for Win 9 and do the job right from the start.

Didn't MS already enable booting to desktop? I have been doing so for awhile now.

They did in 8.1 but they difference here is that now if you don't have a touchscreen it will boot to desktop by default when right now it doesn't when you first install/setup windows 8.1.

Has anyone installed Update 1 yet? It was made available on TechNet last night but not sure if it is available anywhere else.

Last weekend I finally went from .0 to .1. My god the graphic designer at MS must be blind. The default visual theme with 8.1 is absolutely horrendous. And WTF could I not find the one I was using in 8.0.
