Anyone else experience a broken search bar in settings?

I even re-ran the indexing tool and this still occurs. 😕

Search works everywhere else.

You might want to run sfc /scannow and look for a corrupt system file. My search box works just fine.

Also it enables fast bootup by default.

I like mine disabled since I've a PC in the bedroom and hate bright LEDs on my mouse etc permanently lighted when you shut down at sleep time, so had to disable that again.

Also Fast startup breaks some stuff like EaseUs Todo Backup.

I updated both my desktop and my Windows 10 tablet today. The update took a long time on the desktop considering it has got an SSD and 4.5 GHz CPU...

The tablet is currently stuck at 23% on updating drivers and features for the past hour or so. I hope it hasn't gotten bricked. Might just be taking a long time since it's just an Atom CPU and slow-ish 32GB "SSD".

Did anyone find a difference in pc speed on a fresh install of 1511 comparing it to an update from the first 10?

That's the same spot my Venue 8 stopped too. I waited for a few hours but it never progressed past that point. Had to force a shutdown and it rolled itself back to the previous build.

Unfortunately I dropped the thing and broke the bloody screen last night and it is going to be a while before I can replace it and try the update again.

Nice new "bundle" of crapware gets back (reinstalled) with the update
Get Office
Get Skype
Sway
Microsoft WiFi
Microsoft Solitaire
Phone Companion
Skype Video (at least this is good - finally Modern UI Skype app)

Same thing here, never moved past 23% so I rebooted it and it rolled back. I'm using the Lamina/Linx 8, which comes with Windows 10.

Is there any way to look at the logs to see where it actually gets stuck? The Microsoft error messages in Windows 10 are a joke and look like they're written for 5-year olds so not much help there. I tried some get-windowsupdatelog command in PowerShell, but that just generated a huge list of hex-codes and GUIDs which are no more useful than the "Something happened" message.

Was that with WU or the media creation tool? WU failed on my tablet so I had to use the media creation tool and selected upgrade in place which worked.

It went through now.

I moved My Documents, My Pictures etc. from the MicroSD card back to the internal memory, pointed the Temp and tmp environment variables back to their default locations, ran the Windows drive cleanup tool and selected to clean everything, then ejected the MicroSD card for good measure before re-running the update using WU.

Don't know if any of that actually helped, or if simply re-running the update would have been enough. Microsoft still has a long way to go before their updates are as painless as OTA updates for iOS and Android. It still feels like a fragile, third-rate OS on mobile devices where you are used to things just working.

Anyway the device is working fine now. One of the features I was looking forward to the most is the ability to close apps from the task view by swiping them down, instead of having to hit that tiny X with your finger.

Solitaire and sway aren't crapware. If you don't use them just install, takes like 5 seconds.

Assuming Win10 Pro upgrade to version 1511,10586 is the "Fall Upgrade," it is a major reinstallation of Win 10. It takes about an hour and a half, but then there is a lot of work to do. It retains files but destroys most customization. Rebuilding those took about another hour. Otherwise it seems to be OK.

I ran sfc and no corrupt system files were found. Then I tried running the Index Troubleshooter and it actually found an incorrect permissions issue which it corrected. But my search was still broken.

Surprisingly, the issue was related to the default language setting. I switched the default system language to English(Canada) after I updated to try and get Cortana working, and that somehow broke my search 😵

To fix my search, I removed English(Canada) and switched back to English(US). Then I rebuilt my index, and voila, everything's fine now. What an odd glitch.

Other than that, build 10586 does feel a lot faster, and smoother on my Yoga 2 Pro. Battery life seems to have improved by just a little as well.

Took about 10 minutes using the usb tool on my PC, about 20 minutes on my wife's laptop. Although I agree about having to reset all my customization's.

It will get old fast if they do this every three months.

I've had to roll back to the previous build. Was getting random restarts. Thought I'd traced them to MSI afterburner or Rivatuner Statistics server which is sending performance graphs to my keyboards display but apparently that wasn't the only thing.

After the update it gave me a message saying "this program isn't compatible and has been removed" with n sign of what the program was apart from a missing icon When I reverted back, it turned out to be CPUz!

Also Asus Tweak II overclocking software wouldn't appear, even though it was running in the background. Tried updating to the latest version but same thing.

Am much happier back with the old build. The new one introduced more bugs for me than it fixed. Am thinking of getting on the beta build test program so I can have more direct influence over the many problems I've been experiencing.

I wish that 1511 had been available last weekend when my desktop install of 10 took a dump on me. Nevertheless the upgrade seems to be working fine right now on all of my pc's.

I had to turn off "Defer Updates" and then I was able to upgrade on Windows 10 Pro.

Boot up is a tad faster. I had to reinstall CPUID, but that's it. Other than that, no noticeable changes.

I did not experience that kind of destruction. Only thing that was destroyed was it uninstalled my Supreme Commander game saying it was "incompatible" - uh, really? 😕 I don't play it that much anyway, but when I want to I'll probably try to reinstall it. Seems weird.

Other than that, all my settings and stuff was still fully in place.

I did notice I had one problem, Win10 kept failing to install printer driver via WU which was weird because it was already installed and Device Manager reported no issues, anyway the Win10 error I had after this update was Error 0x80240017.

Anyway I fixed it with a manual reset of WU services using method 2 here,

http://www.fixerrs.com/2015/09/fix-error-0x80240017-Windows-8-81-10.html .

Average user out there would have more of a problem fixing these sort of things.

Method 2: Manually Resetting Windows Update Components.

This Method should only be used if the above method fails to Help. Manually Resetting Windows update components requires you to run few Commands in Command Prompts. This is advance method.

Open Command Prompt as Admin again.
Type Following Commands one by one. Hit enter after each command.

  • net stop wuauserv
  • net stop cryptSvc
  • net stop bits
  • net stop msiserver
  • ren C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  • ren C:Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
  • net start wuauserv
  • net start cryptSvc
  • net start bits
  • net start msiserver
Remember you need to Hit Enter after each command for eg: Type net stop wuauserv and hit enter.
After Completing all the commands, Close the Command Prompt and do a RESTART.

Yeah, it's essentially a re-installation of Windows 10. The process and "under the hood" stuff is much more convoluted than a traditional Service Pack.

One tip is to run the Drive Cleanup after updating (after having made sure everything still works). I had 22.6GB in Previous Windows Installations and another 3.5 GB in Temporary Windows Installation Files. On my tablet it was only a couple of gigs, but considering it only has 32GB of internal storage, it was still a huge chunk of the available storage.

I did the upgrade yesterday, most of the settings were gone. Not a big deal for a test machine. So what has been changed/added, is there a changelog at all? Can't say I have noticed anything, but I haven't looked deep enough yet. Apart from a few GUI changes maybe. Classic Shell fixed that.

I've noticed is they put work into the driver side of Windows update, so it should hopefully work consistently to not load drivers on a whim. Also, so far my little action center/network/clock/etc glitch where clicking on one of those things would do nothing until hitting the start menu hasn't reappeared in the last 2 days, but I'm not calling it fixed until it has been a while without issue. After one update about a month ago it seemed fixed at first, but came back after a few days.

Today I ran into a really serious glitch. Apparently, this upgrade also involves Microsoft compacting all OS binaries to save disk space. That should not have been done without permission. It rendered several apps inoperable until I figured out how to reverse that compacting operation. To do that, you must run CMD as Admin, and add the following command to C:\Windows/System32:

compact /compactOs:never

It takes some time, but it works. It uncompacted 13,658 files in 9187 directories. Now the system and apps run normally.

Microsoft should have asked permission or at least given an advisory. 🙁
