will your boss let you work from home if gas prices keep going up?

I do nothing except for meetings that I couldn't do from home with my VPN access I already have.

Meetings are the one thing I dont like doing from home...confrence calling makes it very hard to participate - just seems weird not seeing the people I'm talking with.

no.

my boss's commute is 45 times longer than mine.

(also, there's almost no aspect of my job that could be done from home)

My dad's been doing this for a few years thanks to VPN. He works from home on Wednesdays and really enjoys the break in the 40 mile commute (each way) to work.

we work from home if we need to already. but it's only a day here or there.

and i typically take the bus. however, they increased the price of a ticket due to the gas price increases.

I don't know how much I like meetings that are all over the phone, but the issue of seeing them alone can be solved with a webcam. There shuold be plenty of services that let people have meetings with a video camera.

I only work in the office 1 day/week...but I'm thinking of working that day @ home as well...commute is getting more and more $$$
It's just one day... be happy 😛

I should add, that one day was completly voluntary- I used to meet up w/ some coworkers after work on that day and we'd all go out for drinks....now, those other coworkers are working from home that day so really my only reason for coming in is to attend a weekly meeting...

*edit*
but don't get me wrong- I am very happy w/ the situation- I mean, it is nice seeing coworkers etc once a week, but the commute is almost an hour each way

My department has been pushing for just 1 day a week. It's a bad joke that we aren't. We already have all the licenses for the whole company to work remotely and in fact our lenders do work remotely already. Yet, we can't get approval in a fucking green town such as Austin.

I work in a department called DISTANCE Education yet I'm not even allowed to approach the subject as our director has condemned the practice of working from home.
She on the other hand is allowed to and special considerations have had to be made for her...figure that one out 😕

VPN FTW!

i will ask if it gets too absurd but I really don't think my boss would let me because then the company would have to let everyone do it.

technically i could do my job from home 100% of the time being a software engineer, but we do have meetings every now and then as well.

I work with a lot of large files... (We're talking probably half a dozen files >1GB... and a dozen others that might be manageable over VPN... but I'd spend half of my day just copying them over to my computer to work on them and the other half copying them back.

Working from home for 3+ years. I'm really not sure how long it's been to tell you the truth. The only plus is no needing to get my zombie-ass into the shower and changed into dress clothes. I didn't mind commuting. I didn't mind 9-5. I absolutely didn't mind being around other human beings (what I miss the most).

I think it's a "grass is always greener..." mentality for both sides. Try doing what I do for years and you'll miss it too.

i propose more working from home, or 4x10 work weeks.
My supervisor and I are pushing corporate to let us do 4x10s, but they refuse. Sadly, working from home is a complete impossiblity for us, it's hard to fix a power plant from the house.

QFT. Just log onto your desktop at work via the VPN and you'll be all set. This is how I do work from home.

All I do is conference calls. Veritally nobody I deal with works onsite with me. Many not even in the same state or country even! I may have half a dozen face to face meetings in any given month.

I could do the majority of my work from home, but they would never go for it. The job that I'm looking at allows the option to either work from home or the office depending on how productive you are. A couple of the people I know from there work from Starbucks or Panera near their home just to get out.

SSL/VPN to work, remote to desktop, citrix, etc.
many options to overcome that.

Well, technically with some minor equipment purchases, I could do it easily....but this is one of those areas where the construction industry is behind the curve. There's an unofficial minimum "face-time" requirement. I'd love it though. My girlfriend works from home, but she's rarely actually home. She drives alot.
