will your boss let you work from home if gas prices keep going up?

honestly, regardless of gas prices, i think this is something that is good for the roads, environment, our sanity, etc.

obviously less gas used
lower demand for gas, brings prices back down (hopeful)
less traffic, which means less gas wasted while in traffic
less stress and road rage from sitting in traffic, healthier living
we save more $, so we can spend elsewhere and stir the economy
less pollution
roads needing less repair, more tax dollars allocated elsewhere
happier employees, more productive (hopeful)

so many benefits to this.
i propose more working from home, or 4x10 work weeks.

Nope. My position and industry would not allow it. We are working 4x10 production days though. However, being in Management I still have to come in for a few hours on Friday.

We get to work from home 1 day a week. We have several agents on the desk whom work from home for a couple of months at a time.

I am going to ask tomorrow actually. With gas and inflation relatively speaking I am making less and less money each year. Its kind of bugging me alot actually.

If it really became an issue I would just walk or bike. My commute is less than 3 miles, I've walked it before & it's not too bad. I'd try to find a route avoiding areas with no sidewalks but it's entirely doable on foot.

I've actually been thinking about it anyway, though gas isn't the real motivator. Even at the 12-13 mpg I average my commute is very cheap gas-wise.

yes, i just got approval to work from home on Wednesdays. i asked him last week and he thought it was a good idea so he opened it as a option for the whole dept.

so your clients will come to your house for massages instead now?

I've been working from home for 6-7 months now, 5 days a week. Everything I do is electronic/telephone based. No need for physical hands on anything.

Not possible considering the artwork files I need are stored on a network server and I can't get proofs from home.

I am a systems admin by day, CMT by night.

I could do my job from home, but productivity would drop to historic lows and I'd probably get fat from eating all day.

VPN FTW!

i will ask if it gets too absurd but I really don't think my boss would let me because then the company would have to let everyone do it.

technically i could do my job from home 100% of the time being a software engineer, but we do have meetings every now and then as well.

35 miles each way to work = 70 miles per day = 350 miles per week = 1400 miles per month = 16800 miles per year
16800mpy / 23mpg = 730g
730g x $4.3 = $3140.86 PER YEAR - And that's just my COMMUTE.

Edit: Considering how I'm a network engineer, I'm kinda surprised that nobody at my company works from home... like ever (unless sick).

I'm setting up VPNs all day and I have an ASA at home that is already connected to my work network... What's the holdup?

I asked my boss, he said "How about I just pick you up every morning?"

Free ride FTW! 🙂

I really want to do this and so do a lot of people I work with and we could all work from home the majority of the time but the company is very against the idea for some reason.

I do nothing except for meetings that I couldn't do from home with my VPN access I already have.

I only work in the office 1 day/week...but I'm thinking of working that day @ home as well...commute is getting more and more $$$
