My 4-year-old Viewsonic is starting to "squeek" on me so I'm making this choice right now -- from the reviews it seems we're at least another year from having really good gaming LCD's so I'll probably buy one last CRT. I don't want to spend $700-800 on a 19" LCD with ghosts and/or color problems when I can get a very good 19" CRT for under $300.

The color/contrast/quality is FAR better on CRT.

LCD still looks like you are looking through a fog bank

Envision CRT's are just too dang cheap to stop buying. Once I can puchase a 17" LCD for less than $200 and it looks better than a 17" CRT, I'll get one.

.23mm is not enough?
How much does that cost?
$600.00USD. :)
Sounds like you got a used SGI 1600SW. What other desktop LCDs have such a fine pitch and tight resolution? IMHO anyway it was a shame that SGI discontinued the 1600SW; it was awesome.

Anyway, I'm planning to get a LCD when a) I have enough money and b) when the ultra-high-res 22 inch LCDs that currently cost US$8K fall in price to US$2K. :p

Right now, even mediocre CRT's have better image quality than super high end LCD's. LCD's just aren't "crisp".

Ill still be buying my CRTs for that reason as well. Of corse, I buy a monitor and then dont break it, so it lasts a while.

Until I can purchase a pair of LCDs with equivalent real estate to my twin 17s (16.0" viewable) with equal contrast and unparalleled response time - all for what I paid for those two (CDN$200) then forget it. :)

i love clean clear crisp graphics

untill the lcd becomes more than a "toy" (or the newest toy) the weight difference is nice but not enough imho to consider such a huge tradeoff for my viewing pleasure

The prices on CRT's are very low now because everyone wants a LCD. You can find a top end CRT for a third of what it cost last year.
I just picked up a ViewSonic for $140. It will be a while before the LCD's look as good as the best CRT's. I was looking at a DVD plawing on a CRT and a LCD set up side by side. The movement was blurred on the LCD. Beter get a very low response time if you want to watch videos or play games. And don't buy one without seeing it play video or a game.

I don't see myself buying anything besides 21-inch CRTs anytime soon. Well... Maybe something bigger :D

When I had a CRT (NEC), I thought I was going blind after like 2 hours of looking at it. I had pain inside my eyes. I sold it and got a 15" LCD instead. Regardless of the fact that it has DVI, the image still sucks badly. My eyes still get tired very quickly and hurt. I guess I spoilt my vision with these crappy monitors, no matter what technology they're. I'm not wearing glasses, I guess I need to visit an oculist to check my vision. Sigh.

You do understand that LCD's size is it's exact size and CRT monitors lose some from the edge of the glass that can't display anything right?

17" LCD = 19" CRT
18" LCD = 20-21" CRT
19" LCD = 21-22" CRT

Now, after seeing the above, start comparing the monitors price.

I've just upgraded my old Compaq 18" LCD to a Dell 18" and I'd have to say it's awsome. That compaq is about 4-5 years old. Can you imagine what it cost me back then?

When placed next to my 21" CRT (Sun/Sony), the 18" LCD is just slightly smaller than the CRT, but the brightness and sharpness of it just blows the monitor away. Yes, gaming and video watchign are just fine on the LCD.

I also love that the LCD saves me so much space on my desk, which itself is a mess already. There's no way I could place two 21" monitors and a printer on my desk.

I know this may be slightly off topic but does anyone know what is happening with the flat panel CRT technology, I keep hearing it's almost ready for market. Of course I've heard that at least once a year for the last four years.

Dynamic range and color rendition is still superior on CRT, but I think LCD have the lead on sharpness.

What is a flat panel CRT? Flat panels are LCDs. CRT's are huge so they can't be flat. Do you mean flat screen CRTs? Or is there new technology to make the lasers in the flyback shoot in a much wider angle?

I went from a beautiful Dell P991 FD Trinitron 19" CRT to a Dell 1900FP LCD.

Ever since then I have yet to regret my decision.

Simply beautiful and I have my old deskspace back. Also after hours of viewing the LCD my eyes don't feel as fatigued.
