One product I think it's funny to have a sell by date is soda, they will last longer than humanity.

I sometimes buy old hamburger to make tacos or some pasta dish. I would not buy the stuff to make hamburgers for grilling or pan frying.

depends on how expired and what it is.

dry or canned goods within a few weeks? sure, np.

but I throw meat/dairy out the day it expires.

Nope.
And if it is the expired date and not the best by date, its illegal for a store to sell it.

A lot of expired food tastes just fine. And there is a huge difference on how "expired" it is , expired could be one day or one year expired :p

There is a huge difference between buying food past it's expiration/sell date and buying expired food. For example, buying milk and dairy products a day or so after the date stamped on the container is perfectly fine as most dairy products are good a week past their sell by date. Buying frozen foods that have remained frozen a month past their sell by date is not OK. The frozen food will not harm you but will not have much nutritional value either.

I wonder how many people are aware that it is common practice for large institutions (like public schools) to buy out of date frozen and canned goods?

The bottom line is that it is important to have some knowledge and understanding of how the food gets from the farm to your plate. Unfortunately, particularly in the U.S., there is little interest in food or food production. You can get people to argue all day about who's coffee or cuisine is better but, very few have any idea of the production, transportation and storage, components that lead to those real or perceived differences.

I have to disagree with the dairy comment, it's one of the only product that I find that expire correctly to the expiration date and sometimes 1 or 2 days earlier. Also, I am not an expert on frozen food storage, but it seems frozen food with expired sell by date will last much better (even nutrition) than any other food.

sell by date =/= expiration date

but otherwise, I agree with you, dairy products expire pretty much right on the money.

I agree.

Having worked for a milk company, I can assure you the dates are very accurate when it comes to dairy products.

Depends on what it is.

Most things are perfectly fine well beyond their expiration dates. Especially anything canned.

I've shopped at place called Grocery Outlet that is a closeout store.

Depends on the food

I don't think I'd mess with expired milk or meat, since both actually start tasting funny. Old bread is okay (so long as it's not moldy), in fact if it's just stale that's pretty easy to deal with (soup bread mmm). Old vegetables and fruits... well, it really depends on the fruit/vegetable and the age.

Once at Fry's Food they were selling a box of assorted leftover donuts from the bakery for $0.50 (marked down several times). My friends and I bought them as a joke. Most of them were inedible. There was one chocolate long john and it tasted like someone had spread chocolate frosting on a stale hot dog bun. It was interesting.

It doesn't mean that it is bad. It mean that store can't sell it past that date

Depends. No way in hell will I buy dairy, bread or meat. Boxed, canned, I would if it's less than a few weeks expired. But even then, I'd probably only try eating it on Friday or weekends.

Oh, I'm so sorry. (pulls out a bucket from under the counter) Please accept five pounds of frozen shrimp.

HOMER
(holds one up and sniffs it) This shrimp isn't frozen! And it smells funny!

APU
(brings out another bucket) Okay, ten pounds.

HOMER
Woohoo!
Followed of course by his second ambulance trip. :D

Never fails to make me laugh when they cut away to the ambulance.

I don't think I would. I'm cheap when it comes to anything besides electronics and dining out, but I'd rather not have to worry about each meal making me sick.
