Will we be seeing a used iphone glut come September/October?

When the iphone 6 comes out?

iPhone 6 probably will get lots of iphone 5 owners to upgrade.
The short answer is no, for a couple reasons.

We're starting to get to the point in smartphone evolution where good enough is good enough. My phone is laughably worse than an iPhone 5 and I definitely need to get a new one. But since mine still technically "works," I'm not compelled to do so at the earliest possible moment. Most people with iPhone 5's (plural) should feel similarly, even if according to Barney Stinson, "newer is always better". 😉

Secondly, North American iPhone sales are still dominated by the upgrade cycles of AT&T and Verizon customers. This is a gradual process and not something that immediately sees millions of good condition iPhone 5's hit the used market simultaneously.

Of course there's a fanboy effect which drives the most loyal Apple customers to want the device on the first weekend, but most consumers don't give a fuck anymore about being first on the block.

Actually I bought an unlocked 3rd party refurb iPhone 5 for Xmas for my wife after the iPhone 5s came out. The prices dropped dramatically in those few months after the 5s release.

I'd expect the same to happen to the 5s, perhaps even to a greater extent, when the 6 arrives.

You'll mainly be seeing a horde of people selling iPhone 6 for $2000 while supplies are low.

There will be a small jump in old iPhone sales, but not a huge one because a lot of people simply can't afford to upgrade.

Trust me, after 2-3 months, there will be a lot of the older model out there. It happens with every release.

I will upgrade to the 6 and unload my 5 for a few bucks. I generally only try to get the price of the upgrade cost ($200), so I sell mine pretty quickly.

Three of the 4 or the 4S?

The 4 isn't worth that much these days, but you can still sell them. Better sell them soon.

4 "es". I have 3 of em. And as of this morning, a 5S. One of my users dunked his in a pool and I used another users update and did a buddy update. I told the user to send me the old phone and lo and behold I revived it. So now i have 3 4S and 1 5S. I should unload em I guess.

I predict there will be much higher sales of the next iPhones compared with last generation. Surveys show that many folks went to Android only because they could get larger screens and it looks like this next release will finally give a larger screen option to iOS users.

I stuck with iPhone, but the small screen size is difficult with my poor eyes. Even though I have a 5s 64GB, I will be first in line to upgrade as soon as a larger screen iPhone is available.

My brother has said he will probably ditch his Note 3 for another iPhone as soon as the larger devices are released.

I sure hope the screen isn't much bigger. I hate the large phones. I don't need an 8" screen, I can't handle that many inches. >_<

Apple is constrained in size because of the physical home button. I've got a Moto X and it has a 4.7" screen. It's footprint is almost the same as my wife's 5s. And that only has a 4" screen. It's because the home button takes up so much space along the bottom.

I'm interested to go back to Apple with the iP6, but will be curious to see how well it fits in the hand. I used to have a Galaxy Note II which is quite large, but enjoying the freedom that a smaller phone provides. The 5.5" will likely be quite large. And since Apple doesn't seem to have any desire to make a rounded back, the actual feel in the hand is much less comfortable than some of the larger screened Android devices.

I disagree. It isn't so much the length of the device that matters but the width and thickness.

that's what she said! *teehee*

Anywhoo...it's all a give take game in function. I think the iPhone5/5s is too narrow as it is. Something like the Lumia 920 was too wide. And it was only 4.5" in screen size. The LG G2 and MotoX are about the sweet spots screen size to one handed function. Make the device too tall and your thumb can't quite get to the top edges. Too wide and you lose comfort and the ability to text easily with just your thumb.

I'm waiting for the iphone 6 to replace my iphone 5. So you can definitely count me in to the number of people who will upgrade.

Whatchoo talkin bout, Willis?! That thing is over 65 mm wide. That's enormously wide in comparison to the iPhone 5s's 58 mm. I had a 67.9 mm wide 4.7" phone and really hated the width. Very hard to use one-handed.

65 mm is a big improvement over previous 4.7" models but it's still huge in comparison. While 65 mm is fine for a lot of people, it's a huge adjustment for people who prefer smaller screens.

Mind you I suppose you could use the phone caseless to compensate though. That's what I did with my 4.7" Android phone.

I wouldn't mind a 16:10 aspect with 1920x1200 resolution...but then it won't match my TV shape when I use AirPlay mirroring.

Meh.

I don't know what you consider "huge", but given your hyperbole on everything else is this huge?

That's what my wife has on her 5s. When I set her phone down on top of my MotoX that has a cheap TPU cover about the only thing that sticks out past the edges of the iPhone are the edges of the volume rocker on the MotoX. The footprints between the two with a typical iPhone case very similar.

To get closer to the original topic:

I'm not sure if there will be a flood of used iPhones for sale, but the iPhone 6 promises to be the biggest release since the iPhone 4. It's checking off a lot of boxes: bigger screen, significantly updated industrial design, tougher display glass, and other likely improvements such as better cameras, a faster processor and more baseline storage. Everyone who said that the 5 or 5s wasn't enough to trigger an upgrade (in some cases, even the 4S) now has plenty of reasons to make the leap.

Heck, I've seen a surprisingly large number of Android users who are considering going back to the iPhone now that the bigger models and iOS 8 are poised to address a lot of their gripes. So long as Apple pulls this off reasonably well, we could be in for one of the largest sales spikes in a long, long time.

I pretty much agree that this thing is going to absolutely crush any previous iPhone sales. The *only* thing that I think will hurt is a staggered release of the rumored 5.5" sized device several months behind the 4.7" one. That could sap some sales as people wait around to see/buy that model.

I've been thinking about which one I would want to get. A larger screen does have some benefits for me, but it also has downsides. The iPhone's small size makes it pretty nice when I work out as I mostly just listen to music. A 4.7" is larger already, but a 5.5" may be too unwieldy. Also, I put my phone in my breast pocket while in work attire, and the 5.5" may not fit. A friend let me try out his Note II today, and with his thicker case on, it barely fit into my pocket... and I had to force it a bit.

Although, there are rumors about optical image stabilization being a 5.5"-only feature, which is something that I would possibly be interested in.

EDIT:

To note, while I am planning on upgrading, I have a 5S not a 5, so I won't provide to "the glut". 😛 TouchID was what pushed me to shell out for an off-contract upgrade last year, and I was quite pleased with it. Frankly, if the rumors are true about Apple putting TouchID on the iPad, I'll upgrade from my iPad 4 to the new iPad as well. The one change that I'd love to see is actually in a third-party app. I use KeyPass for managing my passwords, and I'm hoping that the TouchID third-party access means I can use my print to access my database rather than having to type in the code every time (I've gotten pretty fast regardless of its length!).
