We took the Aldi Challenge and their prices were higher than Hy-vee, plus, their selection of "fresh" meats was horrible and they had no good fresh fruit, no deli meat area, and their selection of goods was in general, pretty poor. Would not shop there again. The best bargain we got was a shopping cart for 25 cents that we have sitting in the back yard. :)

I don't buy meat, but from a visual inspection I'd agree. Produce too. It's hit or miss, and usually favors the miss side :^D You could eat 100% from Aldi, but it would get tiresome after awhile. I use them for prepackaged goods mostly, and when I want fresh produce, I go to a regular store.

On the other hand, I bought chicken breasts at kroger for $1.67/lb, tied for the lowest I've ever seen here. So I bought 30lbs, cut them up, and froze them in ziplocks.

Are those chicken breasts skinless and boneless? If they are, the prices are good but if they are not then the prices are high. I would pay about $1 per pound of chicken breasts with bones and skin.

BigLots - Quirky ultra premium food on occasion, and sometimes routine, but very cheap typical stuff. It's always changing, so it's fun to shop there. I also have one of their tracking cards, and get 20% off my tenth order. I load up the cart when I get 20% off :^D

You need to remember that you have to purchase at least $20 (before tax) per purchase in order to get the purchase as "qualified" for the 20% off. I usually wait until the quarterly friends and family 20% off from Big Lots.

I feel like I'm on a fucked up Safari whenever I go to Walmart

PSA: Do not go to WalMart during daytime on weekends. You have been warned.

Produce and meat are not worth buying at walmart, its just gross. They are also one of the stores that injects all thier chicken with 10-15% water/broth, so your really not getting what you pay for on a per pound basis. I usually only hit up walmart every 2-3 months to stock up on non-perishables that are cheaper and walmart cant mess up (tp, laundry detergent, some canned food, etc..)

I have a Kroger and a Publix within 2-3 miles of my house and thier weekly deals are significantly cheaper than walmart (50% off thier marked up prices, is still cheaper). Plus produce and meat selection is leaps and bounds better than WMs in quality. Both ads are available online, and with a little planning, you can save alot sticking to the ads.

I have noticed prices are getting higher and the sales aren't as good as they used to be. Even ground beef is rarely under $3 when on sale now. I fear prices are going to skyrocket in the coming months, and I dont have enough freezer space to stock up enough to completely weather the storm.

Well the other thing I noticed is that the prices are relatively the same or a little bit higher, but the item portions or weights got reduced...

You can say that about any grocery store in a decent sized city. I try to do all my grocery shopping as early as possible on the weekend, or in the middle of the day on a weekday, if I can. Much less stressful.

You especially don't want to be there during the food stamp rush hour.

The entire drought is just a blown out of proportion scam by the Liberal media to keep prices high on food now and high on food years from now long after things calm down. All I ever hear about is all the big bad floods killed harddrive prices. Well been there, done that and prices stayed the same even after making a come back. Food droughts are the exact same way. Walmart is just the sort of defenseless corporation with no voice or recourse that are now caught up in the farmers twisted backwards game to milk them dry.

I am not just talking about the size of the crowd but the nastiness/yuckiness of those shoppers. Feel free to check out the website PeopleOfWalmart.com and see what I am talking about.

I was in a WM a few days ago and went to the bathroom to wash my hands. There was a white brief with full of excrement laying down on the floor. Needless to say, I walked out so fast.

You especially don't want to be there during the food stamp rush hour.

I saw that story on TV about people shop at WM before midnight at the last day of the month then wait until 12:01 a.m. of the 1st of the month to check out. I may have to check it out myself in one of these days.

I have found you have to read Sophitia's posts very carefully. They are highly ironic and mean the exact opposite of what they appear to mean.

I don't carry any physical cards, and neither does my wife.

But I have a barcode or about 15 different stores/memberships on my phone using this free app:

http://keyringapp.com/home

Takes two seconds to pull it up while at check out.

Not to mention Kroger just lets you punch in your phone number to apply your card if you don't have it (or in my case, forgot my phone)

Thanks.
Great app

I think there are two types of corn, the corn we all eat, and a different type of corn designed for animal feed.

Second type is what seems to have been savaged by drought.

There was also segment on NBR a while ago and grass that cows eat has been dying out, and hay prices to feed them have skyrocketed, too.

Skinless and boneless. Fat trimmings were ~2 lbs, which is pretty lean.

These past couple weeks, the edible type of corn has been on sale 4 or 5/$1.

Ironically, what kroger calls "petite sirloin steaks", are their lowest price of the year @$2/lb. That's equal to as low as they've been sold locally in the last 5 years.

high five for knowing what everyone does!

really if you can eat for a day on a box of zatarains (yummy stuff) you are single. come talk to us when its a family of 4 with 2 kids.

to be honest your post was idiotic. IF you can't understand that the cost of food is going to be and is a major issue for families.

oh and guess what? its going to get worse over the next year.

Nailed it waggy. I had to go shopping for a camping trip up north. Just food. 2 adults, 3 kids, 7 days. $309 dollars. That's $1200 a month on food. This wasn't anything special: we were staying at my parents house and they have a fridge and a stove. No pre-prepped crap, all stuff we prepared to save money. Good gosh it's getting expensive.

You are right - there is sweet corn and feed corn. Also you can eat feed corn (and it isn't so bad if you know how to prepare it). I'm a bit surprised - up here in Michigan the feed corn has done spectacularly even with the dry weather.

Produce at walmart is much more expensive than HEB around here. HEB has worse ground chuck & sirloine, though. I tend to go to the meat markets for anything I don't get at HEB, like steak.

I think Michigan got more corn then the midwest "corn" states.

yes you can eat feed corn. In fact that's what most did throughout history. but the process is err. taxing.

also yes the corn effected mainly is not "eating" (or what most call sweet corn). Feed corn is also used in corn based items. also it is going to raise the price of beef, chicken and pork items.

Not to mention i am reading how it will increase the cost of gas (idiotic ethanol)

It's partly this, but also it is fake "evidence" of erratic weather patterns "caused" by "climate change." Fucking liberals

Just got back from Krogers, those low chicken and beef prices of last week are gone.

Prices are now in the above average range. Should have stocked up on more when we had the chance.

Yeah, being situated between the lakes the way we are usually means that even a drought usually isn't all that 'doughty'. It also moderates our temperatures better than most places. Thow the snowfall is just a killer in the lake effect areas.

Yea droughts happen, this is not the first. Every 10-20 years at least we have a drought so.

Although what is different this time, is the absurdly low prices initially due to futures contracts.

While people aren't going out to buy a new bass boat, these fools that are complaining about food prices will be lined around the corner to buy the iPhone 5.
