You people amuse me in a real pathetic way. You clearly have no idea what being a poor third worlder is. I do have a clue because I happen to live in one such nation (while not being poor myself)

Your ignorance is pretty much disgusting, I'm sorry to say.

Meanwhile, everybody who says it's going to 3rd world enjoys a nice Latte and a scone.

I agree, people really have no relative concept.

But it's a STALE scone---how 3rd World is that???

For starters New Orleans before Katrina (don?t know about now, sure its worse) serious crime and poverty out side of tourist and well to do areas. Children running the streets in groups from ages 5-16 dressed in filthy rags trying to grab and steal what ever they can get, high chance of being robbed as soon as you step out of any tourist area. Also severely corrupt local government.

Los Angeles where I live has some areas that are pretty much ran by Mexican gangs & corrupt local governments, people are living all over the place on sidewalks, park, roosters and chickens running around in the streets, filth everywhere far more resembling Mexico than US. I even ran over a chicken a while back didn?t see a farm anywhere by Caesar Chaves blvd and the 710 freeway.

I am sure there are lots of other impoverished areas that have the same thing going on.

Our infrastructure is crumbling and people are falling through the cracks into poverty, we cannot afford all of the social programs we have and they are going to completely fail as funds dry up. These things are on the increase and nothing is slowing it down from what I have seen and it will only get worse as high paying jobs go away and are replaced with nothing or very low wage jobs. There will be those who have lots money and those who will have nothing just like in the third world.

Hopefully it is not to late to make changes to fix the direction the US is going in the long run.

First, Mexico is a developing nation, not a third world nation.

A lot of the things you mentioned are cultural problems, not symptoms of third world poverty. Gangs, corruption, filth in the streets, kids running around in filthy rags are cultural problems that need to be addressed. The fact is these people still have more, do better than those in third world countries.

Your entire post shows you have no clue what third world really is.

I said things that resemble the third world. I am well aware that we are way off from living with zero security, having no stable government, no food, and pretty much everything else. The OP asked what direction the west is going. Do you think things are getting better or worse in the US? I am pointing out how things are getting worse and gave some areas that have taken a turn in that direction.

Some things are getting better and some getting worse. The future is not as bleak as some like to paint it. However, it is a huge leap to come to the conclusion the US is heading to third world status. All countries have issues that are unique to them. The US is going through growing pains, being one of the few western societies that is actually growing in population. Most of the issues we are facing, from crumbling infrastructure in some cites to corruption and crime are symptoms of a growing nation, not one heading to third world status.

As someone said way back early in this thread, it would take a very serious event to put the West into Third World status anytime soon. It could happen alright, but it's more likely to take Centuries. It all depends on what happens(duh) though. I think the West will likely be overtaken by Asia, but not relegated to Third World status. The comparison would be more like the US in comparison to Britain after the end of the British Empire. Britain didn't completely collapse, but it did become just a shadow of its' former self. So in essence, life will still be pretty good, it just won't be the superior life(economically speaking) on the planet.

Magic 8-ball says Maybe

All economies change through history.
Persia is a good example.
Look at everything they had and what they have now.

Some parts of the US already resemble the third world in our major cities and are growing fast.

Please expound on this as I have lived in a third world country (For half a year to be exact) and would like to know how the two compare. When making claims like this it helps if you give examples of how our cities resemble third world countries.
