Even though there's a lot going on in other countries, their infrastructure isn't nearly as well developed as the one here in the US.

I think this is a good time to make it easier for people to immigrate into our country and further things, otherwise the position of power and wealth will be changing.

i'm all for LEGAL immigration

Actually, I am 100% positive that the west will not become a third world.

If they will be '1st' world soon, and the US will be '3rd' world, and the roles are reversed, what prevents the scale from tipping over again. In fact what force is there that would suggest any sort of tipping point? The reason China is getting richer is because of a free market and an increasing balance in the distribution of labor. There's no reason to think that once the playing field is level, one country will suddenly become poor again.

Whatever logic is behind this, it's very defective. The worst that has happened in a very long period of time was economic stagnation, which simply means little growth. This means people are getting richer slower, not poorer.

The obvious answer to your question is that China is getting richer faster, the US is not getting poorer.

The world market is finally, after millennia of human civilization, finding it's balance, bringing unfathomable wealth and technology to the entire planet, but alas, people need to find a reason to complain.

Ya know that its OUR companies that are outsourcing over there, right? its not like all the software manufacturers are moving their headquarters to india.

Look at it this way. If all trade ceased with China, we pay higher prices for consumer goods that will have to be sourced from somewhere else. Everything manufactured in China is still manufactured somewhere in the U.S., just at a higher cost. China on the other hand, would return to eating dirt almost overnight. We are an extremely diversified economy, and have the capability and know-how to do anything. China, and other Asian countries make plastic toys, cheap electronics, and clothes, with imported technology from the west or Japan. So who holds the real power here?

no, someone else would buy their cheap crap.

The point is, many of the things that have "made in china" plastered all over them are products of American companies. So if we pulled out of China, they would no longer produce those cheap plastic toys, unless new companies started.

Meanwhile, we'd still have cheap plastic toys, they'd just cost a little more.

they would still have all the factories and know-how. even if the factories were removed when the companies pulled out... remember these are chinese, they already have everything copied and ready to make counterfeits, knockoffs, or derivatives. the factories would be rebult in no time.

you guys severely underestimate china/chinese. for every western company there, there is either a chinese company that already copied them or new chinese companies ready to pop up and take their place.

Even if China's GDP were to continue to expand annually at last year's rate of 13%, it would take 30 years to catch up with where the US GDP is today. And it would be unprecedented as well as almost impossible to sustain a 13% annual increase in GDP over 3 decades. The US GDP increased 2% last year so it's not standing still. Who knows if China can ever catch up.

Remember there's a lot of "insourcing" going on that everyone glosses over because it doesn't bother them as much as the outsourcing. Especially with the weaker dollar we'll see rising foreign investment in US facilities.

Yes, this is working real well for most of Africa and large parts of Latin America and Asia. We all see how much richer and better their lives are in that part of the world.

With Dell (and some others) you have to pay extra to get US tech support.

Some parts of the US already resemble the third world in our major cities and are growing fast.

Yes, the US is reversing. Will it become a 3rd world country? That all depends on what the multinational corporations want.

Please expound on this as I have lived in a third world country (For half a year to be exact) and would like to know how the two compare. When making claims like this it helps if you give examples of how our cities resemble third world countries.

You people amuse me in a real pathetic way. You clearly have no idea what being a poor third worlder is. I do have a clue because I happen to live in one such nation (while not being poor myself)

Your ignorance is pretty much disgusting, I'm sorry to say.

Meanwhile, everybody who says it's going to 3rd world enjoys a nice Latte and a scone.

I agree, people really have no relative concept.

The price of affluence is disconnection from base reality, albeit unfortunately.

It is almost impossible to describe what it means to be third world to people who have never lived in or even visited such a country. Then again, people in America hardly understand the concept of what real poverty is. What we call poverty is considered prosperity in much of the world.

I said resemble, not third world yet only on the way.

For starters New Orleans before Katrina (don?t know about now, sure its worse) serious crime and poverty out side of tourist and well to do areas. Children running the streets in groups from ages 5-16 dressed in filthy rags trying to grab and steal what ever they can get, high chance of being robbed as soon as you step out of any tourist area. Also severely corrupt local government.

Los Angeles where I live has some areas that are pretty much ran by Mexican gangs & corrupt local governments, people are living all over the place on sidewalks, park, roosters and chickens running around in the streets, filth everywhere far more resembling Mexico than US. I even ran over a chicken a while back didn?t see a farm anywhere by Caesar Chaves blvd and the 710 freeway.

I am sure there are lots of other impoverished areas that have the same thing going on.

Our infrastructure is crumbling and people are falling through the cracks into poverty, we cannot afford all of the social programs we have and they are going to completely fail as funds dry up. These things are on the increase and nothing is slowing it down from what I have seen and it will only get worse as high paying jobs go away and are replaced with nothing or very low wage jobs. There will be those who have lots money and those who will have nothing just like in the third world.

Hopefully it is not to late to make changes to fix the direction the US is going in the long run.
