????????????

It would better because it would have constant upgrades without having to worry if they're gonna leave you behind for some other game.

disagree. the whole diablo experience has been the fact that you can quickly get together with people in a fresh game and not worry about sitting around for 10 minutes for a boss to respawn because some other group killed him before you.

that, and diablo is much more fast paced than any MMO. there'd have to be *TONS* of monsters constantly respawning to keep up with a massive userbase.

I was always a huge Diablo fan... That being said, I will never, ever pay a monthly fee to play a video game.

I would say its extremely likely that itd fall more along the "guild wars model" than the "WoW"

I second this, but............ If I had to pay, I'd better be 100% assured that hackers/cheaters will be taken care of swiftly and beaten down with a sharp stick and then banned indefinately on the first offense w/ZERO TOLERENCE! No letting these idiots back in after a short ban. I know it's not going to happen, and that's why I'll never pay a monthly fee for playing an online game!

I did'nt get into Warcraft because of the fee and all the cheating going on. What is the fee required monthly for Warcraft anyway? $10.?

D3....... 10/31/10!
It can't come soon enough for me.

glad i'm not the only one who won't pay a monthly fee to play a game. especially when you have to PAY for the game too!

personally, i hope diablo 3 is like diablo 2, with the same type of online play and in 2d, but with much higher res graphics. that would kick ass, but i know the 3d crazy mmo public wouldn't have it.

What the hell is this "Mythos" I keep hearing about. The website doesn't provide much info.

Look what Bethesda is doing to Fallout. While I don't necessarily think that it's a bad thing, isometric perspective has gone the way of the Dodo. I can't see Diablo 3 using it, so you might be in for a disappointment if and when a sequel is produced.

Edit: Well, now that I think about it, Titan's Quest still used the perspective. Perhaps there's hope yet.

Mythos has the looks of World of WarCraft, very similar art style, making it far from being a "true Diablo successor", in my opinion.

Diablo2:LOD was barely a successor to Diablo1. Diablo1 is the game that really needs a sequel. That game oozed atmosphere and style. The problem with Hack and Slash games is they don't understand what made D1 excellent. It wasn't just the monty haul style loot. It was the dark atmosphere, the butcher, letting your guard down for a second and getting your ass handed to you. I thought Hellgate London would have this but it doesn't. So far the game is extremely casual in it's approach. Which seems like wasted potential, why build a ruined London full of zombies, yet never once do you get overrun by them (from what I played).

I say that Diablo II was the sequel, as far as the main story line goes, along with back-stories (of the characters themselves, their races, cultures, origins, and so on, all very well written in the game's manuals). I know what you mean though, about the gameplay and the atmosphere, it certainly wasn't the same than the original Diablo's. But Diablo II is the true and only sequel to the first. The expansion (LOD) is decent, but the latest patches (since 1.09) probably made the case worse more than it helped it, even though I still do like that game.

But with today's standards in graphics and complex engines I consider the Diablo series dead, unless they can make Diablo III a stylish 2D game. Would the Baldur's Gate fans appreciate it if BG III would be released in a fully 3D game ? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't. And I'm not just referring to nostalgia, blinding the players in how good it could be in 3D. But I believe that 2D/Isometric point of view should stay like that, or else the hack-and-slash concept isn't the same anymore. In a 2D game like Diablo II you are focused on the action without having to aim nor turn the camera, and having well-made sprites instead of 10,000+ polygon characters gives the game a good art style.

In my opinion, if there is a Diablo III, then it should have most of the same presentation elements, interface and controls. Maybe make better textures, allow high resolutions, but don't try to push the limits on a game style that doesn't need to be pushed at all in terms of visuals. I think it's alright as is, and doesn't need much more to get "better". But the point is that I know I'm dreaming in color. It won't happen, it never will. I'm just taking Blizzard's history as a reference; WarCraft went from 2D to 3D, StarCraft as we know it now also will go to the 3D world, the next logic step for Blizzard is to "upgrade" their last popular franchise, Diablo, to a 3D environment like the others. It would certainly sell tons, and then would die fast (pure speculation, but somehow inside me I wish it would fail).

The better choice, in my opinion, is to let the series where it stands and to never touch it again. Maybe release one or two other patches to fix the obvious issues, but certainly not to make a "sequel". Leave Diablo alone, Blizzard, and focus on something new as a third successful franchise. And if gamers like me, fans of the series, want to know what really happens (canon information) after the events of LOD then just release a book or something.

Instanced "MMO" would work best "Guild Wars" style like HG:L is attempting to do. I'm not going to go out and buy HG:L just yet, but waiting to see final shipping product before judging the game a "buy" or not.

Making a sequel to DII is certainly no small task. After the humongous success this game got, the pressure must be felt as not to mess around with what has become pretty much a classic. Obviously, there is the graphic aspect of the game but I think this is pretty much a given that it won't be in 2D. In this age a very powerful GPU, compare to what it was back when the game was released, I think the next iteration should take full advantage of the new technology. Anyways, even if graphics are an important factor, I don't think that it's the main ingredient that made the game so successful. IMHO, one of the main feature that makes the game so addictive is the item generation system. I don't know a lot of people who have played the game and not made an MF character. Further more, there is many aspects of the game that can be explored, ranging from simply beating the game, to treasures hunting to PVP. All that helps prolongating the playing experience and fun. In essence I think those elements are much more important in making the next iteration of the game than the graphics as long as they are not completely crappy.

I say keep the clickety-click hack-and-slash but do it in full 3D. All they have to do is to twist around the storyline and they're good to go. Keep all the mechanics of the game, i.e., the item generation, swarming monsters, treasure hunting (MFing), PVP.

If that is done, then I think a Diablo 3 would NOT be such a bad thing and it would NOT downplay the classic that Diablo 2: LOD has become.

Mythos is Diablo 2 with a new skin/story. I just got the beta last night. It is the SAME game as D2, same Imps with that annoying shaman that rezzes his dead friends, same skeleton archers, same exploding barrels...

Spiritual is the keyword here. Anyone calling HGL Diablo 3 is sorely mistaken unless they can consider a FPS/RPG hybrid and a Hack N' Slash dungeon crawler the same game. Blizzard has said, for years, that they plan to continue all their franchises for years to come, but they just need time to do it. WoW, SC2, Diablo is next up to bat, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Couple of years, minimum.</blockquote>

Even so...Diablo 3 would be a monster-selling game. I would buy 2...:p

What do you think the storyline will be like?

Does Tyrael get corrupted by the Worldstone?
Do the Prime Evils come back (somehow) and they are a lot stronger?

What new characters will be added?
What will the old characters be like now?

What do you all think?
Wasn't the WorldStone destroyed?

And I don't think we ever heard the final word on that mage dude that imprisoned Baal.

Blizzard is working on another unannounced MMO that is not related to WoW, they have revealed. I fear that it's Diablo 3 and that we will never see another old style Diablo again, but I hope I'm wrong.

I keep saying it, Diablo 3 in MMO form would REALLY suck.

I'd probably still get it though...:p

Even if Blizzard wanted to make Diablo 3 a free multiplayer game on Battle.net like Diablo2 I'm sure Viviendi would overrule that decision and force them to turn it into an MMORPG. Vivendi already said in a wallstreet conference and a powerpoint presentation that was leaked onto the net they want blizzard to create 4-5 new MMORPGs (not expansion packs) in the next 10-15 years.

The announcement that Blizzard is making a new unnamed MMORPG is just verification of this.

That is all well and good but where does all that leave the Diablo franchise?

It means that Diablo III's future is 90% pay per month MMORPG or will have at the very least will have single player as well as pay per moth MMOrpg aspect.

If they are going to do the natural step and enhance the multiplayer aspect of the game from D2 and at the same time support the massive infrastructure the multiplayer aspect will take it only makes sense for ppl to start paying for Online experience.

There are a lot of people around this forum that are having the "Diablo 2 Itch" again (myself included).

So I'm just here to raise this topic again.

Will the Diablo series continue??

Any solid word yet on a Diablo 3?

Titan Quest really is another Diablo. The mechanics are ~100% the same. The only real difference is that you choose your abilities by specialty, not race (you get 2 specialties).

It's a really solid game, check it out.

I know of TQ & IT. I've played them and like them but there is just something about Blizzard, that other game makers can't seem to match or clone.

So I'm keen on a Diablo 3.
