They miss being on the front page of every newspaper.

The Feds should counter-sue.

The Gonzaleses should just quit whining and STFU. If Elian really wants to be in the US, he'll probably end up defecting on his own accord in 10 or 15 years.

Well class actions are the rage in recent days, maybe the taxpapers should ban together a file a class action against the Gonzalez family. We as taxpayers should have never had to deal with this issue and have our money wasted in this way.

Why do they continue to only think of themselves???? :(

"Attorney Ron Guralnick is representing Lazaro Gonzalez, his wife, and his daughter, Marisleysis, in the case. He told CNN he would ask for a "very large figure" for damages."

I knew it all along. They just want the money! :D

Leeches. :|

What a bunch of crap. How much did it cost to keep him here for those few months? Wasn't it in the millions. They should of shipped his but back the next day. What don't they understand about the word "illegal".

This is absurd. The agents who entered that house did so under the full authority of the United States and the action was only undertaken after weeks of the Gonzales clan flouting the lawful orders of the Department of Justice.

Interestingly (and this is something that the media largely overlooked or chose not to report), the Gonzales family are not exactly model citizens themselves, and would surely never be able to adopt a child in the United States. The patriarch, Lazaro Gonzales, has been convicted twice for DUI, and his adult sons, who live in the house with him, have both been conveicted for rather aggravated felonies (armed or strongarm robbery as I recall). I assume that Lazaro came over on the Mariel boatlift.

I hope the United States does not give these weasels a dime.

Actually, an elderly owman here in Oklahoma recently attempted to give them all her property in her will. It is still in probate and I do not recall the amount of assets, but perhaps that will ease their "pain" a bit. Sigh . . .

The sad part is we will give them a dime, whether it goes to them or not is a different story. Due to the fact that this lawsuit has been filed we will spend some tax money on it whether it actually makes it to court or not.

If they don't like it here they can go the hell back to Cuba or any other country they choose for all I care.

hey if you guys had a child that was very close to you and taken form you Illegally then you would be perrty pissed too. I don't blame them for being more than upset with the U.S. goverment for allowing a COMMUNIST goverment to inervine in U.S. matters but I do not agree that they should seek damages. just a little overzealous i think.

Vince they were his relatives, the child was taken and given back to his father. A father is a father it doesn't matter what country he's from. So don't you think Elian's relatives were taking away a child that was close to someone????

a father isn't a father when he's under the direct control of castro and communist cuba. you shouldn't underestimate how far castro will go to get his way. In fact after elian returned it was reported by reuters that elian had sustained a broken jaw and sevral bruises reportedly inflicted by his father...so how good of a father is he?

This is just typical crass behavior of a certain class of people.

I guess for them, it is the American Dream.... Sue for a better life! :(

It's just stupid and sad.

bigvince--- I agree, the regime in Cuba sucks... but this smacks of opportunism. Unless, of course, they spend the money on educating people about the horrors of communism in Cuba... who knows, maybe they do plan on starting some kind of awareness program! :D

Vince - A father is determined at birth, Castro doesn't determine who is the father. Their world is communist, but that doesn't mean we can take all communist children and bring them here. It is not a US matter as the courts determined. I have yet to hear about the child abuse accusations. Sounds like a lot of BS rumors is you ask me.

The child was taken illegally by the mother, and if the mother did make it and the father located her, the child should be returned to the father since the mother basically kidnapped the child from both parents. The only illegally act done was committed by Elian's mother, and the Gonzalez family.

How would you feel if you were taken from your father by another government?

Vince did those reporters have any concrete evidence??? Has anything a reporter gave us been a little incorrect to help sell a few papers with a nice headline. Would a newspaper ever side on the opposite viewpoint as the Justice Department and use headlines to justify their posistion??? Take everything you read with a grain of salt.

A father is a father regardless of what country he's in. So you are saying that if I was a Cuban and my child happened to wind up out of the country I have no rights to him??? Bullshit.

The government handled this correctly, it's too bad they have such a backwards viewpoint with cases here in the US when both parents are citizens. Give it up Vince, you must not be a father because you don't know squat about how a parent feels.

you make it sound like elians mother is at fault when that couldn't be further form the truth! his mother brought him to the US so that elian could live a productive life in a free country and she was well with in her rights to do so. she was fleeing an opressive goverment and a wife beating husband! how can you possibly blame her for anything! really that ridiculous. and how the hell did she kidnap her OWN child!

So Vince, if one parent steals a child from another here in the US they should be allowed to automatically keep the child????

Once again where's your proof of this "wife-beating". Don't believe all the news-rags out there. Remember the doctored photograph crap after he had been reunited with his father??? Don't tell me you buy that crap too!!!!

The lawsuit will never make it to the courtroom; it will be tossed out by any judge with half a brain.

I find it funny how all the republican politicians immediately abandoned this family when they realized the overwhelming support for Elian to return to Cuba with his father.

Unfortunately, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and the grease will be coming from our pockets :|

Father-issue aside, I can't believe it took them so long to send him back in the first place. For one thing, it's illegal for him to have been coming over in the first place, and for another thing, his Father does have legal custody over him. I don't know whether his father was unfit or not, but that's really not for us to decide.

It's just too bad that Elian had to be dragged through all this.

How do you kidnap your own child?

See thats really an easy question: She took the child without the fathers consent. A mother does not have 100% rights to a child - its only 50% unless a consent order says otherwise. She put him out in the middle of the ocean on a raft, boat, tire, whatever it was. Both parents have equal rights to a child and she kidnapped the child and neglected the child's rights to be with his father. She was not within her rights to do so. Do you realize that if a mother and father have joint custody, and the mother takes off with the child and the father has visitation that the mother has kidnapped the child!! Normally when the father finds them the courts give him sole custody and her supervised visitation.

She does not have the right to take away the father's rights to the child. No matter what her reasoning is (better life, or abused). Only a court can do this!

BTW, just because a husband beats the mother it does not mean that he beats his child. The courts in the US see this too. A father and mother is still given custody of the child until she/he or the courts can prove that she/he abuses the child.

I do blame the mother. She broke the law in Cuba. If the mother and father were US citizens and she fled with the child she would have been arrested and put on trial for kidnapping.

bigvince: What if you had been born and raised in Cuba, and somebody decided to take your child from you? I don't care where you are from, or what your country's beliefs are, nobody has the right to take your child from you. I would have fought just as hard as that father did to get my child back, and nothing would have stopped me. People need to think how they would react in a situation, before they judge others.

And as for the Gonzalez family, they are a joke. They used that child to get attention, and now that he is gone, they cannot bear to just step out of the limelight. What I don't understand is if they love him so much, why aren't they happy that he is back with his father, where he belongs?

what you are missing here is that elians father didn't care about him he was nothing more than castros puppet and castro being the media hog he is saw this as a prime oppertunity to make the US look like a bunch of buffoons which he did successfuly. he didn't care that his child was in the US until castro told him that if he didn't he would be jailed this is not conjecture folks it is fact reported by sources outside of the criminal liberal news media. how can you defend the actions of a goverment that behaves in that manner?

Nobody is defending the Cuban goverment, but we are defending the rights of a parent to have his child.
