Once you start, there's no going back, eh? :D

I went back. I had 9800pro. Sold it and went back to 9100. I had 6800GT. Sold it. Had 6800 Ultra. Sold it. Now using 9700 Pro on my main rig.

sorry im not familiar with the radeon 8500 and its demise, what happend to it?

the Radeon 8500 is still a nice DX8 card . . . but it won't play D3 or HL2 at much more than 6x4 or 8x6 at LOW details.

When Unreal3 games get popular as well as other next-gen games the 9800p will be relegated to 4x6 or 6x8 and low or mid details with most eyecandy 'off'. The 6600gt will pretty much be the minimum "playable" card. . . . this is happening in the next 1-2 years . . . it still has some "life" yet.

I'm thinking the 9800 pro has at least another 3-4 years in it. Most people in this forum read about other forum members with UberCard_01 and go out & drop an amount they can't really afford (or more likely, beg mom & dad to do so) so their e-penis will measure up... but if you don't mind avoiding the dick waving contest you'll notice that 5 year old cards can still play current titles at higher reso/settings than consoles...

Please name some 5 (five) year old cards that play better than 4x8 with the very latest games.

(i am really curious . . . . i can't think of any . . . the Radeon 8500/GeF4 series are about 3-1/2 years old)

edit: letsee, that would be older than the GF3 series . . . . like a Radeon DDR64 . . . DX7 cards. . . . don't think so. :p

i guess the best example of an older card (with much older tech ;) ) is the gf4 mx, no i have no idea how old the gf2 is now, but that tech runs like a champ smoothness and res-wise for hl2/CS:S while still looking pretty great :)

I guess i'm just confused why more developers don't take this line and make their titles scale like this, with amazing eyecandy and advantage of (most) new features for the high end, but scaling back to looking great still and running very fast on older feature sets with vastly less grunt behind them...

Hl2 is a different world on a x850xt/6800U than on a gf4mx ;) but the difference is nowhere near as striking as the same comparison in most other recent titles(d3, farcry, PoP), which either run too slowly/look like a$$ if they do run, or don't even run at all :p

geforce4 MX is from October '02. :p
and the 9800's HL2 is [also] a "whole different world" from the gfMX

GF2 is DX8.1 from 01 i think . . ..

No 5 year old cards can run today's modern FPS even at 4x8 . . . . i am seeing Radeon 8500/GF3 (-Except GF4MX) as the lowest "supported" videocards on most of my new games. :p

The future is either consoles OR high-end PC gaming . . . .

edit . . . FC/D3 are 'newer tech' than the Source engine . . . . expect games to get much more demanding. ;)

Lol i was just saying that's the oldest card i can think of that runs hl2 smoothly, not that it's five yrs old.

But having played CS:S and hl2 on my 9800 pro and loaned gf4mx (atm :( ) i would still say that the difference between the gameplay and enjoyment on the two is not that great, unlike when i've tried playing farcry and d3 on the gf4mx :p (i just used the top of the range cards as examples cos they can run flat-out AA/AF at almost any res in hl2)

i was just giving you the 'dates' you seemed to have trouble remembering. ;)

:)

i believe the MX4 is the MINimum card that runs HL2 . . . most other engines have dropped [official] suport for it . . . the r8500/GF3 being today's "minimum" cards . . . they are just over THREE years old.

not five.

it'll be time to retire the 9800p . . . soon enough . . . . i am still playing with a 9800xt
:Q

i plan to upgrade this Fall to a cheap 6800u as my last AGP card. . . .

Gf4mx can't be from 10/02, I bought my ti4600 in July '02, and it wasn't brand new even then. Said 4600 can run FC in 10x7 v.high settings, Doom3 in 12x10 med or 10x7 high with acceptable framerates. I extrapolated from that to get 5 years. Regardless, my point stands true. To further your e-penis measuring contests, most of you will call a card older than 1 year "old", thus giving credence to the console argument of "PCs suck because you have to upgrade at least every year", when in actuality 3-5 is more realistic. Thus more people, especially those prone to FUD, buy consoles instead of PCs. Since most people are prone to FUD, consoles are more popular than PCs. Because of this, games which could be awesome are instead developed for 5 year old garbage like the PS2 (ie. GTA: VC & SA) and look like crap when we get them on the PC - a year later. Some games aren't even released for the PC. See the connection? :p

You're talking 4600 . . . . that's 3 years . . . . i have no argument with anything you said "except 5 years" and now even your "3-5 is more realistic" . . . . i'd say an upgrade cycle of 1-1/2 to 3 years is more typical - for a gamer. . . . . of course, some hold out longer . . . not many people are playing HL2 or D3 or FC or SC:CT on anything less than a GF3. At that point, the xbox looks like a better deal. ;)

i guess we all tend to exaggerate.

:D

edit: consoles are where the money is . . . . expect it to get worse . . . much worse
