Will I get a NSF fee b/c of a paypal transfer?

I bought an e-bay item and hit the wrong button on Paypal, hitting "Pay" before changing my primary funding source to a credit card from my old bank account (which is empty).

Realizing the error and deducing that there was no way to change it in Paypal, I ran to the branch across the street and deposited cash to the teller. My available balance on the bank's website now reads my deposit amount, and the teller transaction appears, but the Paypal request hasn't been posted yet.

How long until Paypal makes the transfer request? Is it a good sign that the available balance/deposit was posted before any transfer request, or does it not really matter?

I've found horror stories online of Paypal trying to push multiple transactions through, racking up NSF fees, so I'm freaking out a bit. Thanks for any experiences people may have. If I get unlucky, at least I have the "I saw an available balance when I tried to transfer, why was it rejected" claim?

If you put cash in the bank your definately okay. If it was a check, you should still be okay because they are "supposed" to process deposits before withdrawls.

If the paypal charge is coming out of a chequing account, you will see the charge posted as soon as it goes through (at least that's how it is with my bank).

I'm 99% sure most banks are like this and that you are safe.

If you put in a cash deposit the same day, you're fine. Also, Paypal debits hardly ever post the same day anyway. You'd have to have a perfect storm of bad luck to even dream of getting an NSF.

I hope you're right, MMT. I guess it comes down to--how "instant" are their instant transfers?

Instant transfers can work either like an electronic check or like a debit transaction, but if they are using your banks routing code with your bank account number, I would say more like an electronic check. The way my bank works is they will process electronic transfers nightly and it will show up in the "pending" transactions, but then it takes another day for it to fully get processed and taken out. So even if a "pending" transaction puts me negative, as long as I get money in the bank before it get's fully processed I'm okay. Not all banks work like this, but I am 99% sure you will not have a problem.

Great. Thanks for the detailed responses everyone. At least I can rest more easily as I keep my fingers crossed. Will update.

Even if it's same day, as long as you make a deposit prior to close of business you are ok...even if that item needs to clear.

I have done this with paypal myself, picking my checking rather than my credit.
