Anyone tried this? I mean what is the difference in PCI and PCI express? I read today that it is better than AGP in the guide on this board. It just didnt say how.

PCI != PCI-E, will not work. And supposedly Dell uses proprietary PCI-E connections, so you might want to check that out too.

What's the card thats currently in the system??

If its an AGP card, it won't work; if its a pcie card, it should, unless what malak said about a propriatery pcie thing is true.

PCI-E is not better or faster than AGP. The only exception to that is if you get an SLI board and use 2 PCI-E NV cards.

You can only use AGP or PCI cards in that 8300. It does not have any PCI-E slots.

The fastest cards out now are available in AGP. 6800GT and Ultra, X800pro and XT. XT PE too, I believe.

The newest X850 series in PCI-E is only marginally faster than an AGP X800XT.

what are you talking about; pcie is sOOOO much faster then AGP, and it provides more power. its just that no cards are fast enough to take advantage of the extra bandwidth that PCIe offers.

Nor are any cards fast enough to take advantage of the extra bandwidth that AGP 8X offers. :D

Apparently "more power" is still not enough to prevent having to plug PCI-E cards in to the PS. :D

It is true that the PCIe BUS is faster, but to say PCIe is faster and it's just the cards that are too slow is completely wrong.

It is not the cards that are slow, its the fact that for games, the software doesn't require the available bandwidth. Games don't even use the bandwidth available on AGP8X, so it is not the video card at all. The ONLY reason to upgrade to PCIe is if you want long term compatibility with the fastest cards in the next generation (or maybe even the gen after that). For the next year, possibly two or even longer, AGP is just as fast as PCIe, and currently the fastest cards are much less expensive on AGP than on PCIe.

Finally, the power issue is irrelevant really, since all the high end cards require extra power leads on both PCIe and AGP mobos. It's only low-mid range cards that don't require an extra power cord. However, they are still using power, so either way you need a PSU that can handle that, and it's not like we are running short on molex connectors, so again, no benefit to PCIe.

-D'oh!

PS, if you were being sarcastic, then sorry bout the corrections.

D!
