Update: Wii to Play DVDs in 2007

Nintendo aims to get women, elderly to purchase its Wii

and yet...

NOA confirms that Wii will not play Hollywood DVD movies.

Nintendo has also admitted that DVD playback will not be possible on the Wii, saying the move was due to DVD players being so cheap that it saw no need to include the functionality, thereby increasing the cost of the Wii hardware. link

"We want to appeal to mothers who don't want consoles in their living rooms, and to the elderly and to young women. It's a challenge, like trying to sell cosmetics to men," said Iwata.

If they want to sell to mothers who don't want consoles in their living rooms, they should have included a DVD player...the Wii is a nice-looking unit, and I know my mom would rather have one box in her living room that two or three. This one goes right up there on the scoreboard with whoever decided to change the name from "Revolution" to "Wii" :p

I think their point is that EVERYBODY already has a DVD player, so what's the point?

See, for an extra $25 it would have had an extra selling point...if they want to sell to the elderly, who often get confused at technology, an all-in-one unit would be the way to go. If they want to sell to women who don't want a console in their living room, why not include a DVD player so they can say, "replace your DVD player with this and make your kid happy".

are you calling me "elderly"?

replace? what will i do with my perfectly good $25 dvd player if it is replaced?

in our office/playroom, we have a game cube sitting next to a $25 dvd player, no problem

it doesn't make any sense not to include dvd playback, it's a matter of convenience and value.

And it will be a reason not to buy for some people.

really really stupid.

Or they could keep their dvd player and the kid can hook up the wii in a playroom, take it to a friends house etc and mom could still play dvd's on her dvd player.

As a woman, over 50, I have to laugh at their clueless marketing. They don't know the first thing about marketing to this demographic.

This is going to be fun to watch.

I think if they really wanted to hit the market, they would have a Wii/DVD player with a built-in amp and include small Bose-style speakers with wireless rear speakers. Growing up, my mom was always like "why are there so many wires and boxes and everything". Yay/nay?

WTF Nintendo? Why not include everything and just price your console at $600. That way no market will be untapped and you can bring in vast riches.

I think it should also have a toaster and cosmetics mirror

Sounds like untapped markets. Why not try?

its not free, they would have to pay license fees per device.

The fees must be trivial though, like $5 or something ?

how else could dvd players be so cheap ?

I could see them adding as options

TODD - Theatre output dolby digital and
DID - Dvd in deck as options,
then for about $500 you could get the WII: TODD - DID.

Now hold your tongue and say it.

If it came with a DVD player, I would be paying for another feature that I'd never use.

Exactly why I'm NOT getting a PS3.

Please don't Sony-fy my Nintendo!

I use my PS2 to play DVDs. What if I decide to go Wii? I'll have to keep the PS2 around JUST for DVDs.

And yes, DVD players are cheap, but do the really cheap ones do progressive scan and component out? Probably need to go a bit more expensive for that still.

us "elderly" don't need that, we have old CRT televisions that only have RCA inputs, so the $25 dvd player from walmart is all we need. besides, we are half blind, what good would "HD" tv's or higher def dvd players do us? we can barely see at all

A Wii + seperate DVD player in the UK would take the price of the Wii above the price of a Core Xbox 360 system :/
