No, what's going to be fun to watch is when some 80 year old with osteoperosis has her arm break off from playing too much Wii Sports Tennis :D!

And yes, DVD players are cheap, but do the really cheap ones do progressive scan and component out? Probably need to go a bit more expensive for that still.

The PS2 is a HORRIFFIC DVD player...

I think if they really wanted to hit the market, they would have a Wii/DVD player with a built-in amp and include small Bose-style speakers with wireless rear speakers. Growing up, my mom was always like "why are there so many wires and boxes and everything". Yay/nay?

I could see them adding as options

TODD - Theatre output dolby digital and
DID - Dvd in deck as options,
then for about $500 you could get the WII: TODD - DID.

Now hold your tongue and say it.

OMFG rofl i just spit coffee!

I'm glad somebody said it.
The xbox player is not so bad, (even though with purchasing the extras needed total up enough for a cheap DVD player.)

Cheap DVD players do come with S-video and component. Not all but some.

The Nintendo Gamecube ALSO offered a DVD playing option.
Harcore nintendo fans have it, but the steep price tag kept me from getting aNintendo Q.

I think knowing that they've given the option in the past, (overseas atleast) and not having it be that popular an item- that made Nintendo figure they could again do without a DVD player.

But seriously people.
If you don't have a DVD player by now, I don't think you should have one.
freaking goodwills sell them.
So you should've either seen one at WorstBuy, or at your local Goodwill.

i see the reasoning by not adding dvd playback, but... i myself never bought a dvd player. i had my ps2, sold that. got a 360 and now the 360 is my dvd player. ive always had consoles for dvd playback, heh.

Yes, I have a $40 DVD player that does progressive scan and has a component video output. My tv, however, doesn't support progressive scan (though it does have component video in and it does make a perceptable difference.) Thus I can't provide any evidence to disagree with nintendo pulling the progressive scan capability from late model gamecubes, especially in light of the fact that the wii is backwards compatable with gc and will support progressive scan. I do, however, wish that they would make the component output cable of the wii identical to the component output cable of the gamecube, which would enable both consoles to support progressive scan. If they do not I will Grumble Grumble, unless the wii is compatible with standard component cables.

Edit: I agree with Nintendo on the DVD playback issue. Why charge an extra ten dollars for something nobody needs? I have a computer with two dvd drives and a DVD player already, who doesn't? It would make sense to have two separate versions of the console though, one with DVD playback and one without, just for the sake of wire consolidation for those people with component video on their tv. They could even come with different hookups, the component video+stereo cable packing dvd playing version and the cheaper a/v cable non-dvd playing version.

See, for an extra $25 it would have had an extra selling point...if they want to sell to the elderly, who often get confused at technology, an all-in-one unit would be the way to go. If they want to sell to women who don't want a console in their living room, why not include a DVD player so they can say, "replace your DVD player with this and make your kid happy".
so your solution to confusing them is making it more complex?

not to mention the cost increase.

DVD playback would require Nintendo to pay licensing fees for every unit, or attach those fees to a required peripheral like the xbox. Besides, dvd players are so cheap these days who cares?

people who don't want to connect a cable box, a dvd player, a vcr, and a game console all at the same time, and remember how to switch between them, and where all the remotes are.

And they could have absorbed the cost of dvd playback licensing without raising the price of the Wii, IMO.

Personally, I think it's more likely some kind of copy protection reason they don't want standard dvds to work.

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer designs a car for the average joe and it ends up costing like 80K or something.

really really stupid.

It does make some sense. It's a feature most people won't use, and it costs money to add it.

If the Wii HAD dvd playback, you really think most people wouldn't use it ? You think the average person who plays games, doesn't watch DVDs too ?

And without knowing how much it would cost, it's hard to discuss if it would be worth it. But given how cheap dvd players are, and the Wii has all the hardware already, I doubt the licensing is more than $5-8 per unit.

Because as a poster on an internet message board about computers, you certainly fit into the demographic that they are looking for.

It kind of makes you wonder how the PS3's Blu-Ray player will be perceived in a few years.

The PS2 debuted on October 26, 2000, I don't have the statistics of DVD market penetration, but I know I bought my first regular DVD player, my trusty Panasonic DVD-A300 model, in the early part of 1997. So DVD players were being developed for 2-3 years before the PS2 and its player still turned out like crap. The PS3's going to be one of the first Blu-Ray players on the market... it's not hard to see where I'm going with this. :p

That said, you have to imagine that the included standard DVD support for the 360 & PS3 is pretty good just because of how long the format has been around. I'm sure the Wii wouldn't have been any less capable, would they have decided to go that route.

A likely reason that Nintendo chose not to include DVD playback on its new console is that it would raise costs. In order for a machine to play DVDs, it must pay royalties for the license. The original Xbox sidestepped this obstacle by offering DVD playable functionality (and license) as part of a separate remote-control add-on.

Modders found a way around that with the xbox so Im sure it will be a matter of time for the Wii as well.

That certainly explains why the dumb remote was so expensive

So a person out shopping for a DVD player will see the Wii, which will cost hundreds of dollars more than a DVD player. This extra expense is due to the gaming functionality, which the person is not looking for anyway. Why buy the Wii then?

Pretty much. Instead of paying a % of the $300 Xbox to the DVD consortium/MPAA, MS only had to pay a % of the $30 remote.

Smart business move.

I highly doubt that DVD playback is whats really on the mind of modders. Anyone who cares to mod surely already has a DVD player.
