Could I get a make and model of that adapter? My cheapo Chinese one won't work.

(Go figure.)

Nope, it's also a cheapie. Completely unmarked and I don't know when or where I got it. It's one of the tiny ones, where the plug is larger than the rest of the unit. That's all I really know about it.

you want to play brawl, but don't want to play mvc3, ssf4, tekken 6, or mortal kombat on ps3?

wtf

That's the Nintendo effect for you, I've loved Super Smash games but I've never really enjoyed fighting games much. Didn't like Guilty Gear and Soul Calibur I got tired of fast, just never been drawn to others.

There's something about beating on Donkey Kong with Samus that is hard to resist...lol

They're very different. Super Smash Bros isn't combo based or really terribly fast. It's just a wide open arena "fighter" with known characters. IMO I don't think a soul would enjoy it if it was a brand new series with all new and unknown characters. It's all about the license.

I think it's blown up because of the licensing and the company behind it, but even without that it's still a great game. It has the same freeform, arcadey brawler appeal that made Powerstone successful and loved. Simultaneous four person action is just fun and you don't have to put up with split screen, ghosting, "screen looking", waiting your turn, etc. It takes a lot of the downsides to a local multiplayer experience and removes them entirely.

They are very different games but really that's the point to me. Traditional fighters are pretty twitchy with steep mastery curves and arguable balancing. SSB is just more lightweight and lighthearted; I don't want every game I play to be uber competitive.

Smash Bros. appeals to people who aren't usually interested in fighting games, and as a result, the matches aren't always as competitive. But they have that potential. I have a friend who WILL win every time you play him. He's not an ass about it, he's just that much better than everyone else I know.

Fighting games practically require you to memorize obscure button combos to do well, something that I am simply incapable of doing. Best I can do in MK, Street Fighter, etc. is twitch a little, maybe throw a punch or two, and move very very slowly. Smash Bros. at least doesn't hide all the good moves behind crazy combos, so I'll give it that.

I suppose any game is going to come down to player skill. Smash Bros. is more in line with most other games while traditional fighting games tend to have the most stratification.

You know nothing about Smash Bros. It's highly competitive.

I know that. And the highly competitive Smash players manage to be even more annoying than highly competitive players from other fighting games, if that's possible.

All I'm saying is it's possible to at least learn all the moves without spending hours training and memorizing shit in Smash Bros. All the characters control essentially the same - everyone has a basic set of A and B moves. They do different things but you can usually figure them out very quickly.

It's probably just popular because it's 4-player and has Nintendo characters, but you have to admit it has very different gameplay from a typical fighting game.

it is only "highly competitive" when you set a bunch of "special rules" for it to be more tournament worthy. it is not built from the ground up to even be tourney worthy.

and the smash bros scene in general is pretty trivial compared to other fighters. but that is because like the other guy said, it is a fighter for people who dont really like fighters. (which again is why tournaments set a bunch of special rules to play it)

That's really not too different from say...SF4 or the MKs. I agree with you that it has very different gameplay than a typical fighting game with a traditional health bar but I rather like that about it. Personal preference I suppose.
