wifi connection problem

So rather suddenly today my laptop can't get an IP from my router anymore. It shows it connecting, pauses and then disconnects after it can't get an IP. The message is "out of network range" in the intel wireless program.

It doesn't seem to be the router, the logs there show it connecting but then a "pae disconnect" message. My Wii and ipod can connect fine to the router and connect to the internet.

Malwarebytes did find a trojan "java.exe" earlier today and I've had some problems lately with spyware infections on this laptop...

Running on XP with a intel wireless card (5 year old laptop, Pent. M 1.8ghz).

Any ideas?

TIA

Have you tried plugging in some static information instead of using DHCP?

Make sure the virus didn't disable the DHCP Client Service. I have seen this happen a few times recently.

To check:
Click the Windows Start button.
Click Run.
Type services.msc in the Run box and click OK or press Enter.
Double-click on DHCP Client Service in the Services window.
Make sure the Startup Type is "Automatic".
Click Apply to save the changes.
Click Start (or Restart) to start the service if it is stopped.
Click OK to close the properties Window.
Try to get an IP address again from the router to verify that it is working.

DHCP was running and set to automatic, so no problem there. Put in the IP manually and it connected for longer but then shows the same "network out of range" message briefly then goes back to "yellow" status (intel pro software running it).

On boot up it shows red (nothing found) then about 10-20 seconds later it finds networks but doesnt connect right away even though my router is a saved profile.

Router doesn't even show it connecting anymore and getting an IP (did so yesterday but maybe a remnant from when it worked). Router logs show "authentication success" then "Wireless PC connected" and then "state:paeDisconnected".

Seems like its a bad network card. Guess I'll try windows XP software to manage the connection, then a usb stick I have and if that fails try a reinstall (been planning that anyway).

Thanks for the ideas.

EDIT: Well, dumb me for not trying this sooner. Connection works fine with windows XP running the wireless card it insted of the intel software. Bah, damn spyware. Might as well format and reinstall the whole thing.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Definately something with the intel pro software. It went funky again after a shutdown and reboot tonight. Windows XP controlling the card and it works fine.
