Several anti-depressant meds are already banned in Europe, and in the US the FDA is beginning to tighten the noose, requiring warning labels that the meds can cause "suicidal ideation" which means being obsessed with the idea of suicide.

We american's like to htink that everything can be solved with a pill. Unfortunately, pills which alter brain chemistry can be very risky. The lawsuits are already piling up, and the pharmeceutical companies have had to pay out increasingly.

The real cure for depression is:

- exercise
- sunlight
- good diet
- healthy lifestyle

By the way, it is very dangerous to get off of anti-depressant's cold turkey. If anyone wants to get off of them, be sure to seek professional assistance on how to slowly wean off of them.

Good luck.

Amen brother. I know a guy who is clinical pyschologist and treats depression a lot and is really damn good (his former patients love him -- he gets like 300+ christmas cards every year now)...exactly his advice:

1) do not go on medication -- if your on it, wean yourself off. Fsck what drug companies and Dr.'s say...the real data says drug hurt more often than help.

2) Change to low stress job and get your financial situation to an easily managable, low worry condition.

3) Just get in good shape and feel damn good about it...get active and stay active.

4) Push through periods of depression...do not let it upset your iternary

Then other things:

live close to your friends and family if at all possible...keep yourself busy hanging out.

Best of luck.

I've been in your shoes before. I am now wife free and there's no depression in sight. :)

I liked to believe I was the source of her depression, but I learned she was miserable long before I met her. Don't know if she's happy or not now that I'm gone, as I don't talk to her anymore, but I'm much better off.

Tavis, my wife has depression too so I have a sense of what you are going through. Hang in there. Hopefully the doctors will find a treatment plan soon that works for her.

when someone's depressed they're not going to be motivated to exercise. they're not going to be able to go on with their life as if nothing's wrong either. and personally, hanging out with people tends to make me even more depressed (possibly a result of social anxiety).

I tend to agree with these statements for some people. IF your depression is due to being a crappy person - it is just better to suck it up, learn to fly right and deal with your issues. For example, with the ex and one of his friends, the behaviors they got involved with should make them feel depressed. Honestly - if you treat people and situations like crap you shouldn't really expect that you are going to feel good about yourself. Text Giving people like this meds isn't solving the problem it just enables them to continue to to hurt themselves and others.

The sad part is that there are people who really do need the help and struggle terribly with mental illness, and would give anything to be able to live a normal life without having to rely on the meds.

It's two bad the two groups couldn't change places
