Damn, there's an S3 out? What advantages does it have over the S2 that I have? Other than the fact that its 6mp vs 5?

Does the S2 have Image Stabilization? That would be the one major feature that would make it a knock out winner next to the S2.

Finally decided to go with the S3 IS. I really, really considered the A710 IS, but for just a bit more ($10) I could get double the zoom. My wife and I don't travel a lot, and when we do we don't go hiking or anything like that....so the bigger camera isn't a problem.

Thanks much everyone!

I'll post pics when we get the camera! Thanks again!

I dont understand why you are going with the S3. It is a great camera and has tons of manual features but as you said earlier all you know how to do is just press the button to take the photo. There are soooo many features on the S3 and you'll probably never use any of them. I have a S1 and my wife wont go near it because she said its too complicated. It is also a very big and heavy camera. If you decide to take it on a trip you are not going to want to lug it around.

The A710IS is also a good choice but again it uses batteries and is also kinda of big. Again I would highly recommend you take another look at the SD models as they are very light and simple to use.

It's still a very small lightweight camera IMO (under 15oz). I'm used to carrying a DSLR though so in comparison the S3 is downright tiny.

Excellent choice though.

I'd also get some rechargeable batteries for it. Canon makes some good ones but any rechargeables will do. I switched to rechargeables for my flash and much prefer them. They recharge the flash much quicker than alkaline batteries do.

yeah but when you compare the elf's 5oz to the S3's 15oz its quite a difference...you can get 3 elfs for every 1 S3. like i said before i have a SD450 and a S1 and the S1 never leaves my house....its just too big to take anywhere comfortably. the sd450 comes everywhere with me while I take most of my at home (indoor) pics with the S1

Sounds like you are going for the Canon name. A smaller camera with the same about features is the Panasonic - DMC-FZ7K which can be had for $60.00 less. If you insist on Canon consider the newest Wide Angle model for $15 more, the POWERSHOT SD800. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07 can also be had for more than $60 less than the Canons.

I have a 30D and I've been considering getting a small digicam like the S3 IS for a while. I have an older 2MP digital ELPH that I've had for about 5 years. It still takes great pictures but nothing compared to my DSLR. I think the S3 would make a great carry around camera for those times when I don't want to lug my 30D around.

if you do decide about going with the S2 (or even an "a" series canon camera)dont forget to tack on ateast $20-30 for rechargeable batteries. the camera eats batteries!! Oh and also the camera weighs 15oz without any batteries....toss 4 AAs in there are youre looking at 17-19oz.

one of the advantages of the elfs is that they use Li-On rechargeables.

Best Prices on Pricegrabber

Canon S2: $288
Canon A710: $314
Canon SD700IS: $299
Canon SD800IS: $344

On a side note some of the Panasonics that were mentioned are pretty good as well but I have had great success with my canons and will stick with them to the end. They are high quality cameras and I dont mind paying a little extra.

Had the Sd630 for a few months, GREAT camera. The screen is huge and it is very portable. Bought the canon case that is just barely big enough for the camera, so I can have it protected and keep it in my pocket.

Highly recommend it, and it can be had for under $300 now I believe

OH yeah, if you are considering an S2 IS, I also have that camera. Great cam also. The ability to buy my own rechargeable AA's is fantastic. The long zoom is nice too.

Between my S2 IS and SD630 I am very satisfied. :)

If you want to expand on your options, check my sig. They also have a side-by-side comparison option so you can look at multiple cams at once.
Sorry if anyone already posted this, I didn't really read the thread.

If you're going to buy a carry around camera, why not go all the way and get a compact? The S3 IS won't fit in a pocket, so you'll need a carrying case and all that stuff... might as well take the SLR.

I'd go w/ the SD 600 my experiance with larger cameras hasn't been so good. and if your shooting indoor I'm assuming family so you need something that is going to be small, quick, easy, and still produce a nice shot.

no, the difference is still not trivial. they both wont fit in the pocket, but the s3 is will fit better in her purse/handbag than a slr will.

G7 vs. S3:

10 vs 6 MP
noise? (G7 sensor is about 2x the size of the S3 sensor)
1600 ISO available on the G7 (though probably not useful)
6x vs 12x zoom (both start at 35 mm)
both have IS
AF is indeterminate
G7 has a better macro range (1 cm vs 10 for the S3)
S3 has the faster lens (no idea if its sharper)
S3 has the quickest shutter speeds
G7 takes half speed HD movies while S3 offers stereo sound for movies
G7 has optical viewfinder
G7 has the bigger and much higer res LCD
G7 is 4.6 oz lighter and smaller
S3 can take AA rechargables or alkalines

Thanks for the info. I haven't actually gone and done a comparison yet because I'm not considering one at the moment. Maybe after the first of the year.
