Damn, there's an S3 out? What advantages does it have over the S2 that I have? Other than the fact that its 6mp vs 5?

Finally decided to go with the S3 IS. I really, really considered the A710 IS, but for just a bit more ($10) I could get double the zoom. My wife and I don't travel a lot, and when we do we don't go hiking or anything like that....so the bigger camera isn't a problem.
Thanks much everyone!
I'll post pics when we get the camera! Thanks again!

It's still a very small lightweight camera IMO (under 15oz). I'm used to carrying a DSLR though so in comparison the S3 is downright tiny.
Excellent choice though.
I'd also get some rechargeable batteries for it. Canon makes some good ones but any rechargeables will do. I switched to rechargeables for my flash and much prefer them. They recharge the flash much quicker than alkaline batteries do.

Does the S2 have Image Stabilization? That would be the one major feature that would make it a knock out winner next to the S2.

yeah but when you compare the elf's 5oz to the S3's 15oz its quite a difference...you can get 3 elfs for every 1 S3. like i said before i have a SD450 and a S1 and the S1 never leaves my house....its just too big to take anywhere comfortably. the sd450 comes everywhere with me while I take most of my at home (indoor) pics with the S1

I have a 30D and I've been considering getting a small digicam like the S3 IS for a while. I have an older 2MP digital ELPH that I've had for about 5 years. It still takes great pictures but nothing compared to my DSLR. I think the S3 would make a great carry around camera for those times when I don't want to lug my 30D around.

If you're going to buy a carry around camera, why not go all the way and get a compact? The S3 IS won't fit in a pocket, so you'll need a carrying case and all that stuff... might as well take the SLR.

G7 vs. S3:
10 vs 6 MP
noise? (G7 sensor is about 2x the size of the S3 sensor)
1600 ISO available on the G7 (though probably not useful)
6x vs 12x zoom (both start at 35 mm)
both have IS
AF is indeterminate
G7 has a better macro range (1 cm vs 10 for the S3)
S3 has the faster lens (no idea if its sharper)
S3 has the quickest shutter speeds
G7 takes half speed HD movies while S3 offers stereo sound for movies
G7 has optical viewfinder
G7 has the bigger and much higer res LCD
G7 is 4.6 oz lighter and smaller
S3 can take AA rechargables or alkalines
