Is she going nuts? I have always heard you should turn it off or it could cause a fire.

She says its not necessary. I say its not worth the risk. Being that I am a man I know I am right.. but how right am I? (some don't see the sarcasm in the question... so I will point it out for everyone to see)

Well, IIRC, it's illegal to fuel any vehicle while the engine is running. Granted, it takes several things to happen to cause a fire, but undoubtedly it can and has happened, thus the law...

I used to always turn off the car during refuel, until I saw numerous friends who didn't bother to turn off their car. Now I always leave my car running during refuel. It's not that crazy.

so i was fueling my car the other day, with it running, talking on the cell phone, lit a cigarette with a match, and then went and sat back inmy car.

got back out of my car, didnt touch any metal and then removed the gas pump...

Why should it matter? If engine fire was going to get back into the gas tank, it would happen whether or not you had the gas cap off.

It's not the smartest thing to do, but there's probably more of a chance of her getting into a traffic accident than there is anything happening while refueling the car.

It isn't a huge risk (since modern cars and fuel injection are so clean and efficient compared to old system), but it is better to be safe.

I've seen videos of people who refuel their car without closing their door. they leave it in, then when the fuel pump is done they get out of the car, leave their door open, and touch the pump... instant fire! it was on a documentary I watched a while ago but it made me a bit afraid of doing stupid stuff at the pump.

Rare occurance, it could happen. Cut the crap with being a man sh!t, and knowing it all. 😛 😉 I'm a woman, I know enough not to do that, yes, I have heard of that. Unless someone is smoking near by, and tossing their cigarette butt. Even static electricity from your hands can cause a spark by touching your car, then touching the nozzle, it could ignite. I heard that too. Either way, common sense should prevail in this case.

In Asia you drive up to the gas station with the engine running, someone refuels you, you pay, then drive off. It's quite efficient.

Q: Engine Running
Why is it dangerous to leave your car running?

A: Many people believe this safety warning only applies to older cars. That is not true. A running car presents a number of "ignition sources" for fuel vapor. The exhaust components of a modern car can literally glow red hot during normal operation. The typical ignition system creates voltages above 40,000 volts.

But turning off your engine while refueling isn't just to prevent your car from starting a fire. There is also a safety issue in the event of fire, regardless of the source. In case a fire does occur in a gas station a running car is a danger. Imagine that fire burns through one of the rubber fuel hoses under your running car. Most fuel pumps deliver gasoline at about 15 to 40 pounds per square inch (PSI). Your fuel pump is now spraying a tremendous amount of gasoline at an open flame.

A guy I dated a while back used to smoke while he pumped his gas. I remember the cashier woman came running out telling him to put his fvcking cigarette out.
