So my wife wants us to go to a Renaissance Fair. My initial reaction is to cringe, but there is a part of me that thinks I could have a decent time. Anyone been? Is this pretty much a chick and kids thing?

which one ? the ones i saw (the big ones in the states, like up in wisonsin) were awesome !

Upstate (Tuxedo) New York

I'm not sure how big this one is by comparison.

Tuxedo? I've been to one in Sterling, NY.

Same thing perhaps (Sterling Forest/Tuxedo) - Text

How big is the fair?
Not the same one.

http://www.sterlingfestival.com/

Where is Tuxedo, NY?

It's a heck of a lot closer to NYC than Sterling, NY. :) (Maybe about 1 - 1.5 hours north of NYC)

I've been to Sterling Forest to ski. I wonder if the fair is held in the same general area.

... Beat me to it.

As others have warned, beware the ones who are TOO into it... my first time at a Redfaire, I immediately got jumped by some girl who asked if my sunglasses were some strange device forged by a wizard.

"Back off, wench!"

Then pull out a stun-gun, and show that you can conjure the power of lightning.:D

Wenches in push-up bustiers, ....

Heh the last one my wife and I went to we took a friend. We stopped to ask a Wench what she thought we should see.

When her mouth stopped moving my friend and I turned to eachother and basically had the understanding that we didn't hear (listen to) a word she was saying.

Good times, bring some cash though.

the one in arizona has "ye olde ATMs" hehe. seriously, there were ATMs there. i still go every year tho, kids love the archery and axe throw games and walking around seeing the shows. i like walking around seeing the boobages flopping around, and having a good time with my kids. i usually get free tickets too, so its all good. if you dont go with any expectations, you wont be disappointed.

why is the renaissance fair always full of people and stuff from the dark ages and middle ages?

interesting question.

isn't renaissance fair different from society of creative anachronism events? ...or is that the whole point of the joke: midevil frolicking in a renaissance setting?

ahhhh.... ;)

Ah, so busty wenches is a good thing then? The word 'wench' threw me off... :)

I'm pretty sure I'll be drunk at some point during the event.

It's a good time so don't act like she is "dragging" you there. ;)
Get in costume yourself for the full effect.

As far as the wenches, they dress in corsets that can make anyone have rude titties, even guys.

whatever anyone else says, meade + wenches with rude titties is always a good thing

I wish my wife would drag me to one of those. I think they're fun....and she would look soooo good in one of those busty wench outfits.

Dude, just find the closest "big ass turkey leg" vendor and grab one. Stuff your face with it and the bad men around you will go away. Those things are freaking great.

Uh, I dont know about that. From the looks of them, most of them look like they are all natural, if you know what I mean.

I'm guessing its like an Anime convention. Except the costumes aren't as interesting, and there aren't any cool stores, and the people are dorkier ( of course, that might be impossible)

My wife belongs to an organization that was approached to work one of the beer booths at our local Renaissance Festival.

We had to be in costume and had to provide our own.

We had to turn in a list of people who would be covering the booth and were required to have extra people lined up to cover any absences.

Their people came around once an hour to clean out the till and were extremely rude when doing so.

We were required to sell "X" amount of beer in any given day and if we didn't we were yelled and screamed at. How much we sold was greatly out of our control. We don't control the weather, or the advertising, admission prices, etc.

At the end of our "service" to them we were supposed to be entitled to a percentage of the profits above a set amount.
Over the course of several weekends we learned to start keeping track of how much we were taking in and it soon became apparent that they were underreporting how much we took in.

I could go on.

The promoters of these festivals are a bunch of greedy SOB's and we as a group decided we of course would not only no longer participate in that capacity, but would no longer attend any of their events.

This is in Michigan so these could be much different elsewhere.

just make sure it's not next door to a sci-fi convention. Things could get ugly.

for every cute girl expect 10 pigs in bustiers.

They are entertaining though....you see a lot of scary people though in regards to how deep they are involved in this.

If you intend to compete, keep in mind it's not really playfighting. Expect to feel pain and possible injury.

Look dumbass, this was almost immediately after I walked through the door in the middle of a long, empty stretch between stalls. I don't think minding my own business and getting jumped by someone acting like a freak is reasonable.

There's "playing a part and being an actor" and then there's "jumping on random people who are minding their own business and acting weird."

As to Civil War re-enactements, hell YES I'd go if they had F-22 raptors! :p

you obviously don't get it...for all intents and purposes when you walk through that gate, you are sent back in time to an Elizabethan era village.

It's called audience participation. the ren faire is an interactive event...

but i guess there's no arguing with a dumbass who wants to see f-22 raptors at a civil war re-enactment.

Probably so. There are different organizers all over the country.

Reminds me of the Black Knight episode of the Family Guy.
"Would you like a soda"?

From what I know, the Renn Fair employees that camp there are a bunch of sluts.
