So this PSU has been powering my PC fine for 7+ years. Had some issue with coil whine with a 4890 when i first got it but since swapping that gpu for SLI GTX 460's its been perfect. Runs fine with RX 480 too, no whine.

Few months ago i noticed when i turned off the PC that the PSU was emitting a weird sound, not like coil whine at all more of a lower pitch sound, and not as loud. More like a humming sound. This always happens when i turn it off now, sound is always the same regardless of how long pc has been on, i can game for hours or immediately turn it off after cold boot and sound is the same, so i dont think its heat related at all.

And sometimes not all times but maybe 50% of the time the fan will spin REALLY slow after PC is off, as in i can count the revolutions per min on one hand slow, so slow it may actually be doing it more often i just dont notice.

Turning switch on PSU off immediately stops the sound, but not the slow fan spin, the slow fan spin always happens for 20-30 seconds(when it happens, doesnt always do it) after turning off PC even if i flip the power switch right away as soon as PC is off.

Never seen anything like this before.

PSU is clean and dust free, more so since i cracked it open to inspect the circuit board for damage after realizing i had this issue. No signs of damage burnt components or anything else out of the ordinary.

You guys think im ok to keep using it till my ryzen build or should i expedite my plans for ryzen lol. It would really be a shame to loose this pc to a PSU going bad, its served me so well for so long.

Some UPS's and some PSU's don't play nice together, depending on the output format of the UPS when it's running on battery power. Doubtful that's your issue unless your PC runs on battery power a lot but I do seem to remember reading a lot about some Corsair PSU's on UPS's resulting in a slight whine, usually caused by the PSU's active PFC. Do you have another PSU you could try?

Not yet but ill be purchasing one for my ryzen build soon. I do have a few other PSU's around but they are all sub 400w and i think a 400w would have a heart attack if i hooked it up to this beast.

Its now making loud popping noises when i turn it on, but only for first few seconds then its business as usual.

I think its time to expedite my ryzen build.

You could swap out for another power supply and troubleshoot. You've been given symptoms and it's only going to get worse. 7+ yeas is a long time for a PSU. All my UPSes are designed for active PFC power supplies, two CyberPower units and one APC. I think it's time you replaced your old power supply.

Not worth putting money into it, Im just leaving it on now, when its on at least it isnt making any weird noises.

Ive got my whole ryzen system ordered now it will all be here by monday except the ram, its backordered for 2-4 weeks.

So in 2-4 weeks it will be retired anyways, i just hope it can last that long, worst case ill yank the rx480 throw a old 8400gs i have kicking around in it and use a 400w PSU i have on hand, at least ill be able to surf the net even if i cant game lol.

You waited a long time to upgrade! Admirable. I retired my i7 920 two years ago. It sat for a year and then I repurposed it and built a dedicated HTPC (a year ago January). Luckily the Seasonic power supply that I had in it is going strong. Yeah, I wouldn't put a bunch of money in it if it's not doing much duty.

What money? Why don't you just use the PSU you got for your Ryzen build and simply move it over when you actually get to building the ryzen setup?

It... is... ALIVE! (evil laugh sound)

Using the old RAM in the interim?
