Wie wants to play in the Ryder Cup

Wie defends right to play vs. men, eyes Ryder spotReuters

CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland -- Michelle Wie defended her right to compete on the men's tour and said she wanted to play in the Ryder Cup some day as she prepared for this week's European Masters.

Wie, making her first appearance on the men's European Tour, will play alongside England's Nick Dougherty and Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the opening two rounds on the Crans-sur-Sierre course.

In nine previous appearances on the men's tour, Wie had missed the cut in eight events before finally making her breakthrough at the SK Telecom Open in Korea in May.

"There are going to be some people that aren't happy with me playing in men's tournaments," Wie said as she looked ahead to the start of the tournament on Thursday.

"I am not expecting 100 percent support every week but that is the way the world works. There are going to be people that support me and others that don't but I feel people here have been very supportive and welcoming.

"I am not just doing it for the support I get, I am doing it for myself and my own self happiness. I love playing men's events and the challenge. I feel an adrenaline rush when I play these events and it is a lot of fun."

Wie also said she would like to qualify for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in the future.

"Hopefully, I will be able to play the Ryder Cup one day, that would be awesome and I think it is totally possible," she said.

"Anything is possible in the future ... we are starting to get stronger and work out more and are mentally tough and we can do it."

Wie tested her game on Tuesday when she joined European Ryder Cup player Sergio Garcia in a practice round.

"Playing with Sergio this morning was awesome," she said. "It is the first time playing with him and he is such a great player I learned a lot playing with him today."

But Garcia believes the high school student from Hawaii will struggle to make the halfway cut this week.

"Michelle is definitely an extraordinary player and hits the ball quite a long way for a woman," said Garcia.

"Hopefully she will do well this week but if she had a higher ball flight it would be a bit easier for her.

"It is not an easy golf course and her short game will have to be sharp. She struggled today to hit some of the greens in two."

Some of the game's leading players, including Australia's Adam Scott and New Zealand's Michael Campbell, believe Wie should first win on the women's tour before seeking to compete alongside the men.

Wie has accepted an invitation to the PGA Tour's 84 Lumber Classic next week and wants to play more against the men.

Wie also responded to Jean Van de Velde's call in October to allow men to compete in the Women's British Open.

"My perspective on this is that the British Open is not called the Men's British Open, it is the British Open," she said.

"The PGA, it's called the Professional Golfers' Association. There is no men's Professional Golfers' Association whereas the LPGA is called the Ladies Professional Golfers' Association and the British Open is called the Women's British Open so I think it is very clear."

Fine, I get it. She wants to make a statement. But here's the thing... YOU HAVEN'T BEATEN ANY WOMEN YET. If Annika Sorenstam (or Inkster or Ochoa or Pak or Kerr) wanted to make a case for playing the guys I have no problem with that. They are proven winners. Wie hasn't won anything.

It was cute at first. But Michelle Wie is starting to get on my nerves now.

It wasn't even cute at first. This is just the Nike spin-machine working full time to keep Wie's name in the news with idiotic statements since she can't get her name in the news by hoisting trophys.

I tend to agree. If there is a woman that can prove she is simply too dominant for the LPGA tour, and can consistently compete with the men, then sure, go for it. I understand she's only 16, and may one day be good enough to play with the men, but right now, she simply isn't good enough, and shouldn't be there.

I actually feel bad for the guys at the bottom whose spots she is taking. Those are the guys that are generally scraping by trying to make enough money to stay on the tour, and missing out on a tournament is a big deal for them.

Meh, it doesn't bother me unless they start handing out exemptions like water. Then too many deserving peeps won't get the chance they need to make $'s and keep their card.

If I was her, I'd wanna play with the guys too. I think they can teach her more than the players on the LPGA. The short game is waay better on the regular tour.

As for any talk about her on the Ryder team, well that's points based and she's got exactly zero. Just media hype crapola. No captain in their right mind would waste a pick on her either. I'm not knocking the kid, but at this point she's got a better chance of growing a penis than playing in the Ryder Cup.

I'm a huge Wie fan, but I have to agree this is getting out of hand. And I agree that it's just Nike spin.

Everyone including Micelle knows that the only way to play in the Ryder Cup is to earn enough RC points playing in PGA events and thats just not going to happen, period

The women need to just stay out of the men's tour. One above average guy should go play on the women's tour and take all their money, then we'll see how happy the women are.

I don't understand. Obviously Wie is as good as any of the top twenty men's golfers and I wouldn't be suprised if she took Tiger down in match play. She should definitely be on the Ryder Cup team.

She gets owned every time.

She's played in eight men's tournaments. She's missed the cut seven times (made one cut on a miracle) and had to drop out of one tourney because half way through a round that would have been in the mid-80's she suffered "heat stroke".

It wasn't a "miracle", she was playing in a tournament in South Korea. The caliber of the guys playing in that tournament is obviously nowhere near what it would be on the PGA tour. And even though she made the cut, she finished nowhere near the top..

Wei is as good as Tiger Woods.

Am I the only one who is reading this? Tell me I'm reading it wrong.

Physically, she is able to compete with men. That's one thing great about golf; age and gender gap is considerably narrower than other sports. That said, Wie is just absolutely horrible at the short game. She isn't ready mentally either.

Tiger was smart. He waited until he was competitive, and he dominated at every level, from college, amature, to pro. He surprised other pros, and it took them a while to catch up him as far as distance. Wie just jumped to pro without winning anything, and she just doesn't know how to win yet. I am sure she will improve over time, but it will take a while.

This has got to be a troll post.

If i was playing golf professionally i'd play on Women's tourneys just to get more money and draw attention too 😛 - I'd get my ass kicked of course, but at least i'd get a lot of sponsorship.

This was the first thing I thought of upon reading the OP's comments.

I would see it appropriate if she was competitive in the LPGA for her to want to compete in some matches in the PGA but she SUCKS bad even in her own league.

You certainly don't understand, your first statement couldn't be more wrong. You must have a serious crush on the girl.🙂

On what basis is Wie "obviously" equal to the top twenty men who have all won multiple professional events on far tougher courses. She has yet to make the top 72 in a single PGA event and she's equal to the mens top 20 in world rankings?😕

I'm a big Michelle fan, she is an incredible talent. But I'm really starting to question the decision to shove her into the spotlight at such a young age. It's really starting to look like her dad and the media circus that follows her don't have a clue about her best interests.

Their is becoming incredible pressure on her to win and if she doesn't show something soon, her sponsors exemptions will start to go away. She really needs consistency and the confidence that comes with it. Traveling around like a superstar, playing different venues on different tours always under intense media scrutiny is not helping her learn to win.

I bet she's be the first person to complain if they renamed it the MPGA...

Yep, it's pretty clear that women should have access to both organizations, but for men it's a one-way street. She's a sexist.
