I don't get this "eat in kitchen" concept. Why do you need a table 5 steps from a table?

I have a small table in my kitchen separate from the dining room. Great spot to work on a project if the work bench in my office is taken up. :p Though half the time it's just a spot that accumulates junk like mail to check later. Only reason I have it is because it came with the house.

For families, it acts as a secondary place to eat (ex: for kids while adults are at other table), if there is visit. My sister has two sets as well and it comes handy when she hosts Christmas etc. But yeah half the time I imagine one set just goes unused and is probably a waste of space. Would be better to just have a bigger dining room. I've actually toyed with getting rid of the one in my kitchen and putting more counter space in that area so I can leave kitchen gadgets (Instant pot etc) out instead of having to always put them away.

Well, I've known people that have a living room that's just for looks, and then the living room they actually use, maybe it's like that?

My 6 year old kid likes to use the kitchen table for arts and crafts. If I had a setup like that, I'd actually have a place to eat without having to move a bunch of glue bottles and markers.

Well it's like Starbucks Coffee.
You walk out of Starbucks and what do you see, another Starbucks.

If you have a wealthy family and big house and you want a nice cute little breakfast nook in the kitchen for convenience, as well as a nice big dining room to eat formal meals, I dont see that as a problem. But two rooms very close to each other and the same size and same table, I dont understand.
I do like the classic old fashioned American house style, with a huge first floor, big dining room, kitchen, family room, den. The Simpsons house is a perfect example, as is the Griswold house in Christmas Vacation.

One day when I get motivated and focused I'm gonna build my dream house.

In Sims 3.

Make sure you build a master suite on the first floor for when you get old and don't/can't deal with stairs. No sunken living rooms either.

Also, the ranch-style one level home appeals to me.
That house in the original Parent Trap was pretty nice.

This goes back 100's of years where the "affluent" had a specific dining chamber for guests to feast. Peasants ate with the cooks and help. It's a stupid hold-over tradition that we all subscribe to. I forked out $$$ for a 14' pine table that seats everyone for the holidays. It's been worth it for that purpose alone.

We rarely eat at the dining table. Last house had a nice big island, this house has a big peninsula.

Dining table ends up as a catch-all...

Rare that I see kitchen & dining setup in new builds. Keep in mind this is for my area.
I see what you describe often.
Large island maybe a small two person table behind the island.

I never eat in the dining room. Always at the table in the kitchen.

I have a dining room table that seats 10.

My kitchen has a 12x12 space next to the counter with 2 bar stools. There's a large picture window with 2 smaller windows that's maybe 10 feet across. I built a bench with storage and made cushions to sit on. My wife's grandmother's dining table is in there with 4 chairs (and the bench) so we have seating for 16+ people when I host events even without adding additional tables. It makes our house popular for holiday gatherings. We usually do something for Thanksgiving and Christmas and almost always have our kids' birthday parties at home.

I usually eat on the couch or at the kitchen table. The dining room table often ends up being sort-term storage or a place we do inside projects the rest of the year, but it's certainly nice to have such a room/table.

Kitchens are a pretty stupid waste of space. Why do you need a whole room to heat up Hot Pockets?
