Why would anyone want to get married?

Ok, I just don't understand why anyone would want to get married. I like my independence, being able to leave the house whenever I like; spending money on the computer (like buying a $350 videocard) without having to explain it to a wife, considering the family budget, etc. I also like going out with my friends whenever I like without being worried about not coming home for the "family dinner".

Seems that a marriage would significantly impair anyone's ability to have fun. Can't you just have a girlfriend/boyfriend, and keep it that way? Why complicate things?

Update: What if it doesn't work out and you have to divorce her? How will you feel then, and what about her getting half of your stuff? Or what if you get tired of her, or no longer love her, and so forth?

P.S. No, I am not a 16-year old kid who never got laid ;)

I am 25 years old, so please none of that grow-up-soon stuff

So you're a 17-year old kid whose never gotten laid?

It's about sharing your love and your life with the one person in the world who makes you happy and that won't mind making sacrifices for. Obviously you're neither old enough nor mature enough to grasp that concept yet.

Because (I'm speculating here) when you get older, your perspective on life changes and you actually want to settle down and start a family. And thus the human race still exists. ;)

Sounds like your just not ready to get married. Then don't. And it seems like you already have a negative outlook of marriage. That it's all nagging and being controlled by someone else. It's not. It takes alot of work to be married. Seems like most people these days are to LAZY to make the effort to make a marriage work. This world would be alot better with less lazy people.

You like spending money on your computer? So do I. Only difference is that I have 2 pretty decent incomes pooled together from which to pull the funds!!!:D

Granted, I wouldn't buy a $350 vid card without telling my wife I was going to but she in turn would never say, "No, you can't buy that".

You do realise that you are not describing a girlfriend/boyfriend, but rather a device for masturbation that just happens to be alive.

<-- isn't married and is 21

If being alone and not having anyone to share memories with and not having a family sounds good to you then go for it. Marriage isn't for everyone. But it just sounds like to me that you have a lot more growing up to do before you can make a decision like that. You're bound to meet some incredible woman who you'd move the earth for just to please her (not whipped but because you love her that much) - I'm sure once you find love like that, you may change your mind.

I am not married but I think you are missing the WHOLE POINT of marriage. Evidently you are not ready yet.

Your outlook changes quite a bit over the course of a few years, trust me. Up until fairly recently, I'd never thought of myself as ready for marriage. Lots of doubts, wanting time to myself, etc. But now I feel that I could make such a commitment, and I'm also able to see why such a union would be desired.

So yeah, almost all guys go through the phase you're in right now. It might change with time and it might not. In the end, just do whatever you want.

marriage is obviously not for you right now.

when you find a woman that's worth more to you than a video card, then you might be ready ;)

LOL! :D

Best quote today! :)

You're right of course, you don't get married to have sex, you get married because you're in love and want to be married.

I'm 18, I can't wait until I'm older and married. I was in a very serious relationship until recently, and it was the most fulfilling thing to ever happen to my life. If that kind of love can make me that happy, I can only imagine what marriage will be like.

I'm not married, but am pretty much engaged. We will do it when we're ready.

You have some strange views on relationships.. Why would marriage impair ones ability to have fun? Doesen't make any sense.

Because to me having fun is staying up late, watching the TV, talking with my friends and doing stuff on the PC.

Getting married, for men, doesn't give you "a lot" per se and really only limits you to one person (kids or no kids). If marriage isn't for you, then fine, don't get married.

Marriage has plenty of benefits, that come mainly emotional. Sure, you can have a very long term g/f, have kids and "feel" married, but in the end, anyone can leave quickly and easily. Marriage isn't made for this quick lift-off, its made for people who believe they want to live the rest of their lives together.

Marriage isn't about sex or lack of freedom, its the belief that you want to be with one person, for good or bad, for the rest of your lives. If you don't want that, just stay away from it -- you won't be breaking less hearts later.
