Why would anyone buy an expensive scooter?

SAWYER

Lifer
I just saw an ad for a scooter that was almost 10k..are you shittin me?! Why not by a nice cruiser? Sure I can see buying a scooter for a 12 year old to ride around the neighborhood, but I just can not see why anyone would choose a scooter, especially for that kind of money

why would anyone buy an expensive car? house? shoes? computer? etc...

they can and want to

I totally saw an old indian guy with a turban riding a scooter in a kurta down the street a few days ago, totally did it like a boss. I was laughing my ass off.

well, if you've been to Punjab, or even anywhere in India really, it's quite a common sight. Haha. I hope to be rockin out with my turban on a motorcycle soon (after I graduate and get a yob)

I've seen these custom scooters around here from time to time. They put motorcycle exhausts on them, do all this custom work to them, but when all is said and done you still just have a ridiculous looking slow-assed scooter.

I'll keep my motorcycle thanks anyway. It is faster than most cars and gets 45mpg when I'm really romping on it.

in boston i used to see this scrawny old guy on a scooter all the time. he wore nothing but a nasty loincloth, a big white helmet and black goggles.

Scooters hold their resale value way better than motorcycles.

Really? I just went on craigslist and out of 198 listings on the first page for scooters in San Diego I could only find 1 that was over $4000 and that was for a 2009 Piaggio MP3 400 which, when new, sold for quite a bit more than my SV650 did new (of course asking price isn't necessarily what he can get for it). Almost all the rest were under $2000 and many under $1000. All listings were between April 1-5th.

Because in some states, many scooters, depending on size of motor do not require a driver's license to operate.

That is why in the Carolinas we call them Liquorcycles.... Typically those that have their license suspended or revoked due to DUI convictions can still get to work on main roads via scooters.

Now, do the same thing for motorcycles

Why would anyone buy an expensive MP3 player? It's a lifestyle statement. 😛

One scooter I would not mind having is a Yamaha Zuma - the 50cc 2-stroke model not the newer 4-stroke. Big aftermarket for modding those things, and they look like a blast to ride, including off-roading.

Same reason why someone would buy an Apple laptop when you can get something cheaper and faster, because they want to.

I rode a Gilera SP 180SP and that thing was pretty fast. It would keep up with the owners 650cc single cylinder in both acceleration and cruise. It was a really nice scooter, and they're easy to ride as they are twist and go.

Aren't all scooters twist and go? 😕

Oh, and there's no way that would even come close to keeping up with my 650cc motorcycle. 😉

No, some have manual transmissions, for example the Piagio Vespa style scooters. As for your 650, I fully expect it would rinse an SP180 all day and all night as they only have 21hp, but the single thumper Yamaha XT 650 I was refering to was only marginally quicker. 🙂

I know around here. You're not going to get in trouble for parking your scooter on the sidewalk. Can't do that with a motorcycle.

Ya, 10K is pretty ridiculous. But $2-3K is perfectly reasonable. And after three years you can sell it FOR THE SAME PRICE.
I remember waxing an older CBR600 on my Aprillia, in the slow twisty areas. It was like riding a bicycle, I loved that thing. In the end though, it was just too inconvenient to take on the highway.

Supermoto still crushes all bikes.
