Question Why won't my 2970wx/x399 system power on?

msi gaming pro carbon ran fine with 1950x proc. I installed 2970wx, and the BIOS screen will not even start! Re-installed 2970wx just to make sure it was seated. Did not change ram/HD/power cables. I have installed the latest BIOS ("c").

No post? No beeps or anything? Could be a rare DOA chip. Any bent or damaged pins?

Also: did you clear/reset the CMOS on the board?

Assuming it's this board, you'll need @ least BIOS 7B09v1A or newer BEFORE putting the new CPU in.

I'm assuming you already updated the BIOS but, in case you haven't, that's the likely cause of your issue.

At that point, I would probably assume that the 2970wx was DOA, and return/exchange it asap. Doesn't happen too often with CPUs, but it's not impossible.

One problem I had is the 1950x will run with memory as high as 3600 at rated speed. The 2970wx/2990wx will only POST and run@ about 2933. Same samsung b-die memory rated@3600

Perhaps this is a memory compatibility problem. I currently have Gskill F4-3200C14Q-64GVK installed, which is on the 1950x HCL, but is NOT on the 2979wx HCL on the MSI website. MSI Command Center app in Win 10 reports the DRAM frequency at 2133 MHz and 1.2100 V.

Yes that could be a problem, but you said it would not even post. Is the win 10 readings with the 1950x ?

After putting the 1950x back in, I can run Win 10, command center, geekbench etc. So..with the 2970WX in, and if I had the "wrong" DRAM, what kind of power-on activity would I expect to see? beeps or code #'s on the motherboard? (I don't even get that now..)

OK, so put the 1950x in. Go into bios and reset it to default. make sure the memory is set to 2133 and 1.35 v. save, reboot to be sure the bios is correct. Then put the 2970wx in.

If it does NOT post. Then another possibility is that your PSU/motherboard do not have enough joice to [power that CPU. Do you have an 8 pin CPU and a 4 pin (or another 8 pin). TWO cpu plugs should be powering the motherboard. Exactly which motherboard and PSU do you have ?

Edit: If its the MSI board above, its got 2 8 pin CPU plugs. You need them both (I am pretty sure) for the 2970wx to post. If 1950x might not have required that.

Mark- Many thanks the advice! I will have to implement these steps in a couple of weeks - I'm going out of town Tuesday, so for the time being I just re-installed CentOS 7 and put this machine back in our computational cluster.

If I were you, I would leave the 1950x, get another motherboard/psu/memory, and then you can have 40 cores and 80 threads total !

Anyway, the more I think about it, I think you have a power problem, I doubt that the CPU is bad.

Cpu's are rarely bad.

LGA cpu's don't have pins.

The socket has pins, and they can get bent.

I bent a pin in my Z97 board before. I even started a thread about why my new CPU wasn't working properly.

Turned out the pin got bent removing the i5 and placing in the i7, and got straightened back when putting in the i5 for tests. Was only visible when taking a high zoom photo on a DSLR.

Probably not your problem, but keep rechecking things. It probably is power related, but you could try to POST with 1 stick of RAM.

Assuming the both board power connectors are attached, which they were, Markfw recommended adjusting the memory voltage to 1.35 v. in the bios. I did so, and it booted up just fine! The Linux OS saw the new proc, so there was no need to re-install the OS. Memory is G.Skill Ripjaws V series DDR4 3200 F5-3200C14Q-64GVK. "Cl 14-14-14-34 1.35 V" on the label. The voltage had been set at 1.23 V. before I adjusted it.

I am glad I was able to help. This is why I try to buy every CPU that comes out (if its worth buying). The experience comes in handy ! These 29(x)0wx cpus are a different animal than the 2950x and other threadrippers. This was a prime example.
