4. Moderators rule with a limp-wristed, iron fist. The entity is so damn schizophrenic that one day a lifer might be sent on vacation for a month for making a comment about the weather and Chuck Norris; and the next day a dozen threads about how one should beware of their asian neighbors, for the sake of their pets, all go unnoticed.

Take particular offense to this one or something?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was puzzled. I was just about to reply that it was one of the most depressing, thoughtful commentaries on AT that I had ever read. I don't even know why I still post here. Things feel like they've especially been circling the bowl for the last two months.

I definitely feel the same as you, but I just can't find the urge to leave. Maybe it's because this is one of the best "Off Topic" sections on the internet, while still maintaining other parts of the board.

If it make any difference, I'm going to post my reply to it here, because I'm going to sleep now<

LOL. I have been getting too many of those recently, especially when I open up multiple thread at the same time in background tabs.

I really don't get why you and people like you that don't like it here, continue to post here. I guess if I was a psychologist I'd venture to say it had something to do with low self esteem or that you're a masochist. It really doesn't make sense for an intelligent person to continue to do something that disagrees with them. But in this day and age of no integerity or self control, it's not suprising.

habit I guess...
I can't stand message boards that aren't active. Believe me, I've tried to go other places.

Keeping in mind that there isn't one Mod and each one has different "values/ideas", what, in your opinion, can be done to make the forums better? Back in the days when I had my battles with them I came to realize that each one was different and was going to handle things differently.
I see others bitching about things but I seldom see constructive critism.

Wrong, a mod will gladly listen and discuss if one forms it out in a thoughtful, polite, and mature matter.

I have noticed this myself.

The only thing I can think of that the mods can really do to make this place better would be to increase their consistancy and try to be more heavy handed on the trolls. There are dozens of posters that have never said a positive thing to anyone for any reason and I really think that if the mods just became more uniformly heavy handed on the truly nasty people around here that we'd all be better off.

This is something I had trouble understanding at first.
Let's say there are 20 Mods. A simple problem could be handled 20 different ways. This is where inconsistency comes into play. Or at least what people see as inconsistency.
Mod 1 might ban someone for calling someone a name. Mod 8 might not think the name was so bad. Mod 17 might laugh and think it was deserved or funny. Who sees the thread first and acts on it? You could see how is times 20 might look like inconsistencies.
So you say, "OK, let's have a set of rules that all the Mods have to follow. That will give us the consistency".
Well, here in the US we have a Constitution and many, many laws. We can't agree on many of them and the same thing would happen here. This place is just a microcosm of the real world with all the same problems.
There is no easy answer, but there is a reality.
We are guests here and no one is here against their will. If we don't like it we can leave or tolerate it. The Mods can run this place anyway they want. Good or bad, fair or not. It's their sandbox.
For those who say it will be run into the ground and everyone will leave, you are delusional. This place is here to stay til Anand tires of it. How many boards have sprung up because of this place and how many of them have 142,994 members? Or 1429 for that matter.

EDIT
Forgot to address trolls.
I think the trolls should be hammered too. But there is another reality: they get page hits. Page hits count. How do you factor that in times 20? If the trolls get too far out of hand, they get booted but sometimes it takes what I feel are too many chances.

No. Many of the mods here are actually quite a bit better than those on other forums, but during the Change of Culture I can think of at least one person who was given an extra long vacation for disagreeing with a moderator.

I, for one am very glad that this thread survived long enough for Oldsmoboat to have shared his thoughts. I am still thinking about what has been said and will post my further thoughts later :)

I thought that thread was funny, and was spot-on on almost everything. I was kinda sad I couldn't reply to it.

Were you ever given a timeout and if so for what infraction?

nice thread, good points by oldsmoboat.

In my humble opinion, the thread had no reason to be locked, whether what was written in it was wrong or not. It was not a trolling thread, no specific names were mentioned, and let's be realistic, the points made were much more accurate than the majority of posts out there. But hey, this argument has been going on forever, and the mods are in charge. :)

One simple thing the mods could do would be to always edit the OP of a locked thread giving the reason/rule violation that caused the thread to be locked. Right now it seems to be entirely dependent on the mood of the mod that is doing the locking.

And the stupidity of the OP and/or posters within the thread.

Many times a little common sense will clarify why the post may have been locked.

If you are thinking of the person who I am, he blatently called out the Mods. What did he expect? But, I understand where you are coming from, but most of the vacations given to members that have been here for a while have come from repeated offenses, and something that may seem small might have just been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Notice this thread is not locked because mature discussion is taking place, and the Mod has even participated. Olds also made some great points. :)

So you think this thread needs an edited note for the reason it was locked besides the OP being an idiot by posting it?

very good point!!

I think a standard should definitely be put in place. Some guy can talk about his wife and his rape fantasies, but you can't post a funny pic of 2 dogs? From what I read in that post, everyone was laughing and not 1 complaint.
