The Jerker allows you to add shelves all over the thing in those holes. You could add a shelf for your computer, a shelf for a laptop, a shelf for a printer, etc.

So what does the price look like after all of those shelves and customization? If you add on 10 shelves, does it still compare favoribly to a $200 all MDF desk with adjustable shelves? Maybe, I just don't like the industrial utilitarian look enough.

But the conclusion is that this is a buisness opportunity. If ATOT likes it so much, and if it is discontinued, can you fill that gap?

I'm assuming that it's going to be replaced. And I've found it to be of higher quality than the usual cheap-o desks (Bush, Sauder, etc brands) that you can get at Best Buy, Office Max, etc.

Update: I got the new Ikea catalog today and it looks like they replaced it with the Fredrik desk. Smaller and less customizable, but cheaper (only $99 with 2 shelves, etc).

this is pure conjecture but i would say it clashed with the minimalist aesthetic of the other ikea furniture. its a shame though. good thing i got a very nice set off craiglist for 100 bucks

yeah, I am getting mine off craigslist. People are selling them for around 50, just for the desk it self.

Through 2 desk changes, I never even considered the Jerker (both were from Ikea). It isn't exactly all that cheap. The legs aren't that good considering they lay flat on the floor perpendicular to the desk (blocks wire/power bar laying. The Gallant line is slightly nicer, and comparably priced, but lacks the shelves. I just went with the really cheap Vika line with non-customizable legs after my first Gallant.

I am looking for a new computer desk and right now the Galant is my top choice. I saw several pics of it in HardForum's desktop threads and it looks like a good choice for a computer desk. It seems you can also add other Galant table pieces to it to expand it.

For which desk model? Are they not packaged together? I've never been to an IKEA store before.

It's not a model. They sell these boards and legs separately. Good sized board is something like 20 bucks and each leg is something like 5 bucks. So you can build a simple but sturdy desk for 40 bucks.

Here was the one I was looking at:

So that only gives you the board, and I have to buy the legs separately? Although the one I linked to was $160.

Wow - you got all that from him saying that you have to buy the legs separately and a picture of a desk with no legs? ;)

If you want to save yourself a few bucks and have a nicer looking desk, get a sheet of birch plywood at Home Depot to use as the top and buy the legs at Ikea. Buy some molding to cover the exposed edges and some Minwax Polycoat stain for a very easy one-step finish.

Jerkers were being sold all over CL when I was in the market for a new desk. looked too...bland and lame for me. I wanted one of those Galant set-ups (simple, unassuming?).

ended up with this

couldn't be happier ;)

I have space to spread out my work (err...paid and unpaid bills, that is). but actual workspace is what matters. I had a setup similar to the jerker. Won't go back to that.

I just picked up two of the Mikael desks (for me and the wife).

I got the Corner Workstation and Rolling Cabinet for my rig. I almost died when I saw the size of the boxes. The first part for the desk was normal sized; but, the second box (the actual desktop) came in a 50 x 50 x 4 box! No way was that fitting in or safely on our Accord. Fortunately, my father-in-law lives not to far from there and I was able to borrow his van.

The wife wanted a straight desk, so she got this one with this add-on. IKEA (at least in in Stoughton, MA) had a combo for the desk & add-on for $100.

Waiting for the Ryobi's battery to charge...

Most companies have no idea what is good and what isn't. Look at Microsoft for example. They discontinued the IME3.0 for no apparent reason. They then introduced some POS that nobody bought. They finally realized that their old IME3.0 was a hot seller and decided to re-release it. This makes me think that perhaps they discontinued it just to get people wanting it more and they'll eventually re-release it in a year or so.

I think that's the Vika line I was talking about. I pieced together a nice black-brown 150cmx60cm (something like that) desk for just $50. Could have even saved $10 if they had cheaper legs in stock (red, black.....white *shudders*).

As for the Gallant line, they are very nice. However, I had to say no back then to 'upgrading' my Gallant desk (80x60) cause I just couldn't swallow the fact that the current desk surface would be dumped/thrown in a corner. If you're not on a shoe string budget, they are great. Just wish I didn't over-torque an A-leg...now it's standing on 3 working legs at it's lowest height, and I've been too cheap to replace it.

Did you start with the desk top that I linked to? Have you added on any other galant pieces? Which type of legs are better, the A or T style?

Actually, could you post a pic? ;)
