You're late to the party. It ended hours ago. Feel free to finish off any half-empty bottles of beer, and you can have what's left of the cake. Just try to clean the place up a little bit, thanks.

Really, it's a personal preference. I am not a big fan of soccer, but I absolutely love baseball. But then again, my friend loves soccer, but hates baseball. It's really a matter of what you CAN play, and since soccer is the most accessable sport in the world, people from poorer areas of the world can play, as can wealthier people, thus it becomes the most popular sport in the world, all because everyone can play.

you want a mind boggler, try NASCAR. i honestly cannot comprehend the popularity of it. i would really like to know why, when there is F1, WRC, JGTC, and other GT or SCCA events which seem so much more exciting.

To OP: You may as well ask why football, baseball, basketball, golf, etc. are interesting.

Soccer is a competitive sport that requires a lot of skill, just like most other sports, and it happens to be held as the #1 sport by an overwhleming percentage of the world.

must be a total retard to say kids play baseball or football. Really ? who plays football ? kids ? adults ? no one plays football that I know of, except the serious college and pro teams. I can't even imagine anyone playing football for fun. This is idiotic. American football is a fun game to watch, not to play. That's why nobody plays that. Regular people can play baseball, but again it is not nearly as much fun to play (not talking about watching it) as sports where you are doing something all the time, rather then just standing theer and waiting. Basketball is similar to soccer in that many people, but it still not even close to being as easily picked up as soccer. Soccer is the easiest game to get into. Football - you must be nuts if you think any kids like to play that.

correction: only a primitive aging baby boomer would ask that. No kid or parents of small/teen kids today would ask that even in the US.

so i guess everyone in the world feels the same about american football as we do about soccer. they both think their sport is a no brainer. what we need then is tolerance of ignorance.

can't we all get along, and fight about something mind boggling like NASCAR!

get it thru your head nobody even in the US think football is a no brainer. Only the people that make money of it. Personally I cant imagine anyone playing football for fun. Kind of like people in ancient rome watching the gladiators, but no one wants to be a gladiator do they ? compare with soccer, which is a simple game, can be played with any number of people, doesn't require any special equipmwnt, is very safe, doesn't require a special field (can play on hard surface as well), and is a lot of fun and good excesize.

Dont hang on to the false notion that anyone likes to play football. Not even in US. "Hey guys lets go out and play football !" (never heard that except in NFL)

i dont understand how baseball is so popular. it's the worst sport in my opinion. Yes it takes talent to hit a ball traveling 90 miles per hour of faster. Let alone the fact that you have very little time to adjust and anticipate what is coming at you.

Not that it doesnt take talent because it does, but it just takes so long to get through a game. You sit there and do nothing for about a minute, then have a burst of action for 2 seconds, then sit there and do nothing for a minute

And the US sport called 'football' is just a wussified form of rugby.

'OMG! Those rugbyplayers actually are hit once in a while! How scary! Let's all dress up in protective clothing and tight panties so we can all dryhump eachother without people thinking we're gay!'

Because there are 200mph crashes. Only reason I can think of.

Soccer is the most popular because all you need it a ball to play, so even 3rd world countries can afford to play it. You need speed, stamina, skills, and actually have to think while playing. As opposed to football or baseball (most boring sport in the world).

PS I play soccer and it's more worldly renowned/popular than football ANY day of the week .

Not cause its better though, sorry.

I am convinced it is more popular period, because all you need is a ball, people, and a fairly flat surface area (and of course, maybe two things resembling goals).

Every other major sport in the USA is much more complex. This is why I think it is so popular across the world...cause it certainly isn't due to is level of excitement.

Wooo...he just passed again...rock on!

LOL. You have got to be kidding me..

Soccer requires thinking, but football and baseball don't?

Off yourself, please, for the sake of humanity.

Football and Baseball players are even more moronic, but soccer players don't reach the intelligence level of a brick either.

Oh, and cricket will always takes first place in 'most boring sport' competitions :p

He's asking why its such a popular YOUTH sport. Not why its so popular world wide.

Personally I think its popular with kids because give a 3yr old a ball. They cant throw it or hit it... but they CAN kick it and usually quite well. Take into acount that its also very athletic and "even" as far as team play is concerned so that nearly everyone on the field gets to participate in it (unlike baseball or football where its more or less isolated to a few key positions). So kids start playing it EARLY and simply continue on with it until they out grow it or find interest in something else.

Ok, that is very true. Soccer is considered a 'poor sport' because you can give a kid a ball and he can start learning the sport. I remember our coach used to tell us to go every where with our soccer balls and this is pretty much true. You can practice soccer while running, or by yourself in your backyard, or in a parking lot. You can also make up hybrid/extremely fun sports like soccer-tennis and soccer-baseball (omgz kickball!) This lends soccer to being a very fun sport to get into but a very hard sport to master.

Soccer-tennis is great - not too much effort, in teams up to three, on a tennis field. It's interesting to look at, and interesting to play

Look at rugby - I found it much more interesting:
those time outs in american football last forever
the game of american football is very very fragmented
the player with the ball in rugby is in front of everyone else, there are no guards

as opposed to that, rugby is played in 2 halfs of 40 minutes, without pause between (the referee can delay the change of the field halfs like 5 to 10 minutes if the weather is hot, but he can decide to start 2nd half a couple minutes after the first
you can see unfragmented attacks that last for several minutes, if the two rugby teams don't fight to break the game.

disclaimer: I haven't seen a match of american football from one end to the other
