Things are definately different. When I was in the 6th grade teachers used red pen liek crazy on our papers and now today they are saying red pen is negative to children. When I was 16, my paprents told me to get a job and now parents are telling their kids to take it easy because high school is too hard.

In the good old days blacks sat in the back of the bus.
In the good old days, the flu killed more people than World War I
In the good old days, stock market speculation caused a world wide depression that lasted for years
In the good old days, they didn't have infant car seats
In the good old days, they couldn't diagnose cancer until it was too late
In the good old days...

People are better educated, wealthier, healthier, and have more opportunity than ever before. These are the good NEW days.

It would be good is parents knew how to raise their kids......From what I have seen, kids todays are 1 or two things, punks or wimps, there is no middle ground anymore.

i think parents are getting much more involved with their kids than they used to.

shoot, i was part of the generation of kids that defined latch key kids. both my parents worked full time.

but not for my wife and i, she raises the kids. but i'm seeing that a lot more, where one of the parents stay home with their kids now.

mb it's just the people we meet.

They're looking for a middle ground, I think. Right now, we have a flood of overbearing parents. (I'd say kids born around the 90s are the ones really getting hit by it)

That's just a ridiculous statement. Obviously, there are punks and there are wimps. But its stupid to say that they are all that way. That's like saying corn used to taste better back in the day.

Since your two examples were about sex, I will agree with those who think things are getting "worse".

There is no question people are having sex earlier. It's true that you can find examples where 12-year-olds got pregnant 100 years ago, but it most certainly ISN'T true that 50% of 16-year-olds were having sex back then, like they are today.

People are influenced by what they see on TV and in movies. For whatever reason, there is a disproportionate emphasis on sex in the media. You can argue whether they do that because that's what happens in real life, or whether it's the other way around, but the fact is that people have sex earlier than they used to.

I can't say that's a good thing, and maybe that's what the others were referring to.

You might want to check your history books. Most girls were beginning to marry around that age back then.

naw, u see gangs of new york? well it was worse. there are books with photos of what the tenaments were like back than, squalor ..totally disgusting.

oh remember the book/movie Angela's ashes... those were good days😉

I think it's just part of the human genetic code to find people younger than us wreckelss and abscent of responsibility. Regardless of how we acted at that age.

It's like once you get past 25 you suddenly turn condecending and can't stand them damn braindead and irresponsible teenagers.

And it just seems to grow worse with age.

*shrugs*

People who think things are getting worse have no sense of history. It isn't old people either. it's also 17 year old armchair conservatives.

They don't make you. The owner is a Christian and obviously believes thats the way life should be, but its not at all like everybody there is a christian or anything. I go because I agree with what he's trying to do in theory, even though lately its been pretty torturous.

In some ways we have progressed and things are better than they were in the past. In other ways, we are worse off.

People seem to be more shallow today, as you can plainly see from almost every thread with a picture of a female in it... the political world has much more tension than it used to... there is a lot more pressure to succeed today than in the past.

More people are depressed today than ever before, or maybe just more are properly diagnosed, and there can be many reasons for this.

Remember: Just because people are physically more healthy and wealthy doesn't mean the same for the mind. I think people are simply more hostile today.

Two things have brought this up.

First, where I work, they have a "Christian Devotion" on monday mornings. Today's topic was on Sodom and Gomorrah. ALL the old guys in the room were like, "Oh, certainly everything is getting worse in the world." When all I can think of was THE SAME ISSUES THAT WERE AFFECTING SODOM AND GOMORRAH ARE STILL ISSUES, SO HOW EXACTLY ARE WE FALLING DEEPER AND DEEPER INTO THE PITS OF HELL SINCE THEY SHOW SEX ON TV?

Then, in the "Would you let your 10 year old watch porn" thread, there are a number of comments like "now that 12 year old girls are getting pregnant" and stuff like that. IT HAS GONE ON FOR CENTURIES! ITS NOT A NEW THING!

Just my rant on old people. (Especially Christian ones.)

That is pretty funny that some people said that. Now that twelve year olds are getting pregnant? Maybe people should remind those saying that that we used to marry women off against their will at that age; now we prosecute against it.

Hell, Romeo & Juliet, a story people like to say is an unbelievable love story, is about a teenager scoring with a thirteen year old in three days then killing themselves. Love? Right....

Actually the average age of marriage in those times was the early 20s, because a man wasn't entitled to his woman's dowry without having a stable living environment, and usually land. It's a common misconception that people got married in their teens. They would have had babies then, and without welfare or government involvment it was very hard to raise a child without a solid income and landholdings, which meant much more than they do today. Also remember that premaritial sex was highly frowned upon, which would have meant that two unwed parrents would be doubly financially burdened as no outside assistance was likely to come in, from either family. 🙂

Well, I agree that men were probably older because they had to have some source of income. But I don't know if that applies to the women.

which age are we talking about? dowry's? you mean the middle ages when NO ONE except the "land lords" owned land? but wait that would mean only land lords got married.

you mean 1700's in the US? mb.

you have a very short version of "the past".

you do realize of course that the past extends to at least 10,000 yrs of recorded human existence. and the farther back we go, the earlier women got pregnant.

but again, it's about leisure time, the idea of romance was different too, people didn't go on "dates". people didn't "hang out".

you found someone your age or you parents did and you did it and that was marriage. there wasn't as much of a selection, shoot you were lucky to find anyone in your village close enough in age to you.

the idea of "choice" only matters when there is a big selection process. given the size of towns and villages of 300 to 400 yrs ago, that was rarely an issue.

Corn DID used to taste better back in the day. Tomatoes, too, especially. Now they are all genetically engineered styrofoam. Even the seeds you buy in the store to grow in a home garden produce crap.

In the good new the gays and straights are fighting the same discrimination as the blacks
In the good new days, abortions due to sexual disresponsability kill more babies than any natural cause ever has
In the good new days, middle east unrest rumors caused a world wide oil price panic that lasted for years
In the good new days no one takes responsibility for their own safety and problems, instead they sue everyone else
In the good new days, children have difficulties dealing with broken (single parent and same sex parent families) homes and have late life emotion problems and mental breakdowns
In the good new days, parents are afraid to discipline and instill respect into their children (because of abuse lawsuits), and they end up taking guns to school and mass murdering fellow students
In the good new days, the number of cancer and disease cases has now multiplied tenfold because of all the chemicals and pollutants we have released into the environment.

Oh yeah...were in the good new times.

Maybe because its just a numbers game. There were child molesters etc, back decades ago. When I was young my mom thought nothing of letting me run around till well after dark. When we lived close to my school, wlaking home or riding the bike to/from was not a problem. I would not dare let my 8 year old do that now. Even in the small town we lived in, there was still the occasional report of an attempted abduction.

Oh settle down. All I said was that I don't think women were ever really expected to own anything before getting married whereas men often were. So it seemed to me that his statement that everyone was always in their 20s when getting married didn't sound plausible for at least one of the sexes. Even today men are usually older, and women expect them to be established before they want to marry them. Back when women had little economic or political power, I'd hazard to guess that, once they were old enough and met some one they married off. Thats all I was saying. But thanks for the history lesson, dad.
