Why the HELL do old people think that things are getting worse?

Two things have brought this up.

First, where I work, they have a "Christian Devotion" on monday mornings. Today's topic was on Sodom and Gomorrah. ALL the old guys in the room were like, "Oh, certainly everything is getting worse in the world." When all I can think of was THE SAME ISSUES THAT WERE AFFECTING SODOM AND GOMORRAH ARE STILL ISSUES, SO HOW EXACTLY ARE WE FALLING DEEPER AND DEEPER INTO THE PITS OF HELL SINCE THEY SHOW SEX ON TV?

Then, in the "Would you let your 10 year old watch porn" thread, there are a number of comments like "now that 12 year old girls are getting pregnant" and stuff like that. IT HAS GONE ON FOR CENTURIES! ITS NOT A NEW THING!

Just my rant on old people.

I can't hate old people. Me mum's one.

change, the older we get, the less we accept change.

but what young people don't seem to understand is, change for the sake of change isn't good either.

People acknowledge different experiences during life at different times. So what may have happened to you as a kid, didn't happen to someone else, but is now happening to their kid and they are finally coming to terms with it.

People will always look to the past fondly, it is how we deal with things. That is why it is necessary to constantly remind people that the present is usually much better, all things considered. If too many people get caught in the mindset that things were better in the past, they start moving backwards and everyone loses.

I think since the world is getting much "smaller" due to the media (TV, Internet, etc.) we are better able to hear about all of the bad stuff that goes around.

That is pretty funny that some people said that. Now that twelve year olds are getting pregnant? Maybe people should remind those saying that that we used to marry women off against their will at that age; now we prosecute against it.

Hell, Romeo & Juliet, a story people like to say is an unbelievable love story, is about a teenager scoring with a thirteen year old in three days then killing themselves. Love? Right....

Since your two examples were about sex, I will agree with those who think things are getting "worse".

There is no question people are having sex earlier. It's true that you can find examples where 12-year-olds got pregnant 100 years ago, but it most certainly ISN'T true that 50% of 16-year-olds were having sex back then, like they are today.

People are influenced by what they see on TV and in movies. For whatever reason, there is a disproportionate emphasis on sex in the media. You can argue whether they do that because that's what happens in real life, or whether it's the other way around, but the fact is that people have sex earlier than they used to.

I can't say that's a good thing, and maybe that's what the others were referring to.

Go look up Charlie Chaplin. Out of four wives, only one was a legal adult when they were married.

i disagree, most cultures have encouraged and allowed sex from a very early age until recently. sure the puritanical culture that this country has it's roots in didn't allow it, but that is very short period of time in terms of history of the world type thing.

agrarian societies always needed more hands, so more kids were a good thing. they started having kids way early.

what has changed is, we have more time for leisure and more time to indulge.

it's the indulgence that has become an issue, we indulge every desire.

Pablo, how old are you?

Consider the fact that these people have a LOT more time on the planet then you (or I) do. From their perspective things have REALLY changed. Life is much more hectic, the planet is more crowded, global warming, etc., etc.. Put yourself in their shoes, perhaps things really are getting worse, you just don't notice it because you have lived so little.

it also isn't true that 50% of 16yr olds are having sex.

In fact, I'd be willing to wager the percentages of each age group having sex really haven't changed a significant amount. It's just because of our ability to transfer information so quickly and on such a wide scale that we hear about these things.

some things have improved but not everything.

the fact is, we do have a problem with indulgence in this country, witness the "fat" problem. people don't get fat because they exercise self control. don't give me the argument that they are heavy due to genetics or glands. we are fat because we eat too much.

our sense of discipline is eroding.

everything is too easy in this society, making us lazier.

You say "certainly". Do you just know this? Also, 50% of 16 year old having sex now... Is that a fact? I'm sure that probably 50% of 16 year olds have had physical affectionate contact with the other sex, but I don't know how believable that figure is.

people are ignorant.

for instance crimes down. but no one would know it i guess considering news coverage.

and the good old days? for who? very bad times to be black or non white just a few decades ago for instance.

and medicine.. many more ways to suffer and die just a few decades ago.

as for sex, in the old days they'd cover it up with "shotgun weddings". and hell you still see the price of ignorance, the teen pregancy rate is worse in the backwards god lovin south for instance.

i thought that it was physically impossible for a 12 year old to get pregnant back in the good old days due to poorer nutrition, less hormones in food, no global warming, etc

bull. sure we have more conveniences and labor saving devices, but real world wages for workers and the middle class have been slipping from decade to decade. and people have to work more and more hours. perhaps they do stuff their face and snack to compensate for the stress, but they are certainly not lazy.

I'd say the big difference would be that people aren't getting married as much at extremely young ages, they aren't being forced into careers in their teens and they're being allowed to get educations (even a high school education is a big difference).

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that there were more sexually active teens back a hundreds years or more than now (Percentage-wise, of course). The big difference would be that those teens were married off first.

I'm a ripe old 23. Obviously, things have changed. But sixty five years ago there was a guy trying (somewhat successfully) extinguish a race of humans. I contend that humanity is still struggling with the same issues they have since the beginning of time (or the fall of man if you prefer). I think its a bad attitude to have and it makes people feel self righteous that they are as bad as subsequent generations.

Sounds like they're just jealous that they weren't getting laid in highschool to me. :p

Who cares about that crap...I'd just like the economy to get back on track and housing to stop costing a gazilion dollars.

just because we work more hours it doesn't mean we have discipline. not the same thing.

discipline means walking up the stairs instead of the elevator. it means ordering the medium fries instead of the large. it means taking your kids for a walk instead of telling them to play a video game. . . .

it means memorizing what can be found with a simple search on google. . . .

Since the beginning of conscious human thought every generation on this earth has thought that they would be the last.

We always seek out evidence to bolster our opinions and discount any evidence to the contrary.
