Why Republicans claim they can't make a deal with Obama

ProfJohn

Lifer
Here are some details that might explain why everything is totally falling apart. And why Republicans are proclaiming that they can't make a deal with Obama.

Obama is offering up $500 billion in savings via entitlement reform. That was the headline getting all the news.

But once you dig deeper you learn that what Obama is really offering up is the same thing he offered by in April. These are not new cuts, but the ones he already wants.

So in effect what Obama is saying to the Republicans is this:
You agree to the cuts that I already want
&
You agree to the tax increases that I want
&
We will have a deal.

Once you learn that is becomes obvious as to why the Republicans are refusing to go along. Obama's 'deal' isn't so much of a deal as it is Obama getting everything that he wanted.

My source is the National Review. A well regarded long standing conservative magazine.

Almost every single GOP member of Congress signed a "no new tax" pledge. There is no need to search for additional explanations when the simplist and most obvious is staring you right in the face.

PJ, you're a liar.

That is not why Republicans say they cannot make a deal with Obama.

That article is breathtakingly dishonest.

Additionally, I love how not destroying the world economy through a credit default is somehow listed as something that 'Obama wants', as if doing that is a favor the Republicans are doing.

Please stop posting this shit.

This is pretty silly. "Obama wants a deal so Republicans shouldn't give it to him" is basically what you're saying.

If Tea-Party Republicans want to stick to their guns, that's fine, but that's not compromise and there's no point to try to make it sound like a compromise. Obama is willing to anger his base by making cuts. What are Republicans willing to do to anger their base?

Seems they left out the part about SS/Medica(re)id cuts they recently offered that got the progressives all upset. But why let facts get in the way of a good old fashioned Norquist Circle-jerk

The devil is always in the details.

Just for kicks I'd like to see the Repubs call Obama's bluff.

Republicans can't even make a deal with themselves, so they can't call Obama's bluff. They can't pass ANY increase in the debt ceiling. Enough of their teabag freshmen are holding out for a balanced budget amendment, which they don't have the votes for, and a pony.

House Republican leaders will huddle with their rank and file members Friday morning to discuss raising the debt ceiling, even as a deal continues to be elusive and the clock ticks toward a critical August 2 deadline.
Looks like Boehner is going to lock them in a basement until they can at least agree to vote for SOMETHING.
Negotiations are likely to continue over the weekend, but the National Republican Congressional Committee has other plans — a weekend event at a swank resort in Pennsylvania. The NRCC has its “Summer Meeting” this weekend at Nemacolin in Farmington, Pa.

An invitation obtained by POLITICO reveals an impressive agenda: a golf outing that will cost $203.60 (“charged to individual’s room&#8221😉, “sporting clay & bird shooting,” a wine tasting and a political briefing over breakfast Sunday morning. Attire is “resort casual.” Attendees include top D.C. figures from corporations like Altria, AFLAC, BGR Group and ExxonMobil.
And if that doesn't work, maybe their corporate handlers will tell them to come to their senses. But they'll probably demand their tax loopholes stay intact.

What I am saying is that Obama's deal is not a deal. It is only giving Obama what he already wants.

Bipartisan means that both sides give a little and get a little. In this case Obama only gives up what he already wants to give up. There is nothing bipartisan about that.

Honest question here then. What concessions have the Republicans offered in this debate?

They can just vote for a clean debt ceiling increase and give up nothing too.

That seems to be what the right is calling for now.

Take everything that Obama has already offered and throw it together in a package and push it through the house and see what the Democrats do.

"Mr. President we will raise the debt limit if you agree to these spending cuts."

Increasing the debt limit would be a concession.

As sensamp points out many of them want a balanced budget amendment to be part of the deal. They want a long term solution that does not require us to come back and ask for more money in another 2 years.

Oh Oh Oh

Mr. Professor I know the answer, please call on me.

It's because he won't drop the country's drawers and bend over at their command, right?

Admit it the GOP lost all credibility when they refused to negotiate on the big proposal and adamently refuse to even consider anything to increase the federal government revenue. The GOP had only two objectives in this process: (a) humiliate Obama as much as possible and (b) decrease taxes. The deficit is just a smokescreen.

Let me see congress pass the cuts for 800 billion then we can talk!

This is all just a phoney baloney promise the democrats will never pass. It is like saying Peter Pan will come and bring a pot of Gold. It is not going to ever happen it is pure baloney!

Liar Liar Pants on fire!

Increasing the debt limit would be a concession.

No that's a foregone conclusion. So the Republican concession is we won't destroy the country and possibly the global economy if you give us what we demand?

Yup that's giving a little to get a little.....

Edit: since you added more to the original quoted post. Those aren't concessions. That's further demands. A concession isn't
saying we want this this and this too.

The right is calling for a balanced budget amendment, or no debt ceiling increase at all. They don't have the votes for that. No votes for amendment, means no votes for Republicans to pass ANY debt ceiling increase bill, even the one you want them to pass.

The only thing this boils down to is this.

Republicans can choose one of the following.

A) Total Economic collapse

B) Boo hoo... some super rich people may get additional taxes and only net 5.5 billion this year instead of 5.0 billion. BOO HOO. Their money is worthless if our country turns into mad max.

They would rather make a political point than to just shut the fuck up and do the right thing. Any elected official standing in the way of progress should be out of a job.

I think Professional John suffers from some kind of inferiority complex, why else would he constantly go online to show how dishonest he is?

I almost feel sorry for him. Almost.

The repubicans won't comprimise because they see nothing but positives from allowing the country to default. They would gladly wreck the economy again to protect their corporate handlers and hand Obama a percieve defeat. And besides they are already morally bankrupt, taking the next step to finanically bankrupt doesn't scare them in the least.
